Alright, I'm in the club too! Happens only when it's really cold out, been parked over night. Glad to hear I can add this to the list of things to not really worry about. a 96 thing? perhaps...

I've actually got a .wav file of the sound, happy to email to anyone that wants to hear it, send me a PM if so. Just a quick zing right when it fires up...

"Zipping" sound....yeah that's it. Glad to know what that sound is finally! Thanks CDan.

My '96 does it too. PS pump is indeed the culprit. I've also heard of 2000 Tundra's doing the same thing. Guess it doesn't get cold enough where yoda engineers come from. You should all hear the decibel and length of the sound when it's -30 outside!

Well, it's not just a '96 thing, as I have this problem too and mine is a '97. Just like everyone described - only occurs when it is cold outside, and it sits overnight. The longer it sits and the colder it is the longer the whining occurs on startup. VERY releived to hear that it is normal.

Nakman sent me the .wav file. That is EXACLTY what I hear on a cold startup.
