Help needed with a power steering issue as I had to replace the return hose on the power steering reservoir and while at it i decided to change the fluid. I am the second owner and I used the recommended fluid (dextron ii atf fluid) as stated in the owners manual and PS cap. No issues with the power steering fluid until I changed out the fluid and now it is has the whining sound and not wanting to turn. I followed instructions on changing out the fluids that I found here but now at a loss on what I did not do or now need to do. Help and advice is appreciated. The new hose is roughly two feet in length and came from NAPA and is a designated transmission hose. Thanks everyone for some insight.

I don’t have experience specific to the 80, but I’ve changed a few PS systems on different vehicles.

You probably have air in the system. Try turning the wheel all the way left, then all the way right. Back and forth. It should get easier once the air is purged. The whining might persist for a bit, but after a drive around, it’ll go away.

Thanks, if it warns up today I may go and jack up the front axle again to make it easier to turn, that is how I got all of the old fluid out.

Yes, air in the system.

Place front axle on stands and cycle left lock to right lock 50 times, checking fluid level every 10 cycles.

Do this with engine off for the first 30 cycles then on for the last 20. Shut it off to check fluid level.

Oh, and cycle SLOWLY.

(sigh) I'll say it again.
The PS system self bleeds.
Engine off: fill reservoir, put on cap. Run engine for a second or 2, shut off. Fill reservoir, put on cap. Lather, rinse, repeat until level in reservoir remains constant.
Run engine, turn left and right a few times. Shut down and check level. Top off as needed. Move on with life.

This business of jacking up the front and swinging a live chicken over your head while standing on 1 foot is ridiculous. I have R/R every single piece of the PS system on multiple FJ80s/FZJ80s and never had an issue with air in the system as long as you don't allow the pump to cavitate and there are no leaks in the system.
If the pump cavitates and foams the fluid, let it settle overnight and start again.

Same thing with the cooling system. Both systems self bleed.

The FSM for my 94 shows the procedure with raising it off the wheels and turning lock to lock. It has worked successfully for me. No swinging of chickens 🐓

I believe it's the same with the FSMs for all years and I'm one who always follows the FSM. I practically preach it. I just find it a colossal waste of time and effort to do it that way when it comes to the PS system. It's really not necessary.

My '95 80 is the only PS systems I think I have ever seen that refused to self-bleed until I did the 'jack it up and go lock to lock with the engine off'. Fine after that. What really irritated me (many years ago) is that the OEM Toyota pump I installed lasted about 1 year before whining again. I dumped some Lucas Power Steering fix goop in it, and it was quiet ever after.

I did sacrifice a chicken, smeared the blood on all four corners, making sure to get full hand prints at each crossover point.

Then, I threw the chicken through a rust hole in order to christen the interior.

After that, my PS miraculously worked.

It sure made me feel better, I know that.

Oh, and what brand of fish scale do you use for tightening your wheel bearings per the FSM?

Thanks for everyone's input. Was able to get out there and yes I did jack up the front end enough to get the tires off the ground. After going through the process of cycling left and right about 50 times as described above i had to add fluid twice during the process. It now if 100% fixed and not making any noise at all. I could not find a chicken to swing over my head but did find our house cat and I highly WOULD NOT recommend swinging a cat over your head by its tail as I tried to do, that just won't work. Thanks again everyone as I am now up and running !!!!!!
