Swapped the ECU on my 1993 FZJ80 to the 94 model year, to upgrade from the faulty ECU issues of the 93.
Plugged the new ecu, reconnected the battery, and started the engine. The engine starts hard, sounds like it is missing on a few cylinders, will not idle and will die after about 30 seconds. It is throwing code 12.

None of this was happening with the old ECU, and when I reinstalled my previous ECU it all returned to normal and ran as it should.

Am I missing something in the process, will the new ECU "learn" the car, or is the new ECU faulty?

Thanks for any help

I put the working 93 ECU back in. Trying to determine if I should be returning the 94 ECU to the seller as faulty or if theres some portion of the procedure I am missing. Unfortunately I am on the road and dont have access to a multimeter to test the ECU.

Thanks for the heads up. I was aware of the learning function, but when I have reset my ECU in the past it just resulted in a slightly different driving characteristic until the ECU learned my driving patterns. As it stands with this ECU installed, the vehicle wont make it more than a foot without dying, not sure how much learning itd be able to do from that.

Who did you get the ECU from? Was it me? If so I can send another. You name seems familiar is why I ask.

The '93 ECU is prone to setting a series of codes, IIRC 83, 84, 85, but other than the CEL being on haven't noted a running problem? Some get all spun up about it, on some level I agree, prefer the CEL is off. In two cases we have swapped in known good, "updated" ECU and the same code string, one of them, have tried 3 ECUs including temp swaps from rigs that don't code, and still code in that rig. In a lot of ways, the '94 and earlier seem to be about half baked on the learning curve compared to the OBD2 rigs.

I would run the original 93 ECU for now, and IF you bought the 94 from Slow95z, then take him up on the replacement offer. Otherwise, contact your seller and explore options.

@slow95z I didnt get the ECU from you, but I will let you know if the seller I purchased it from is unable to replace this ECU.

With my original 93 ECU installed, the truck idles extremely low. I thought it might be connected to the ECU being faulty. That was the reason for purchasing the 94 ECU, along with it throwing the codes for TCM communication.

Part. number the same?
Did you have codes with the 93 ECU?

Original ECU was the 60220, and was throwing the 83-85 codes. According to my searches, this is usually resolved by replacing the ECU with a 60221 ECU. New ECU is a 60221 part number, and is throwing code 12 and the engine wont idle for more than 30 seconds.
