Ive noticed two issues with my cruiser recently. The first one is a bad "dead" spot during acceleration. It feels very sluggish up through half throttle, then it opens up suddenly and pulls like I think it should. The second issue just started. It seems to happen randomly. Sometimes when I come to a stop or even at first start up, I put the truck in drive and it tries to start in that gear. I can manually shift down to low gear and take off and it's fine. Once I get back up to drive again and come to a stop again it downshifts fine and acts normal. I've thought maybe TPS or AFM as someone suggested for the first issues. I'm stumped on the second problem though?!

Is it not downshifting all the way? From a stoplight it's wanting to start driving in second or third? It sounds like your transmission.

Mine does that sometimes. It's on my list of things to fix when we move in June. I'm sorry I don't remember the fix - its in either the transmission FSM or the vehicle FSM. Maybe tag your thread with a442 or transmission, or edit the title. Someone knowledgeable on the transmissions will respond.

X2 on solenoids, either that or your neautral safety swith and wiring is corroded or broken, but my money is on solenoids like the rest of us 93-94 guys with craptastic shifting issues. I'm fixing mine this summer...with an engine and transmission swap lol.

Thanks for the info. I'll check on those solenoids and get them ordered.

Yeah, randomly when I stop and go again it's not downshifting from 3rd or drive. It started doing it on the trail over the weekend and a few times on the way home. I miss my old mini truck manuals.

My 93 does the ghost tranny thing too. From what I found here it's the solenoids.

Any ideas on the dead spot during acceleration?

Hey 84shortyota, did you manage to find a solution/cause of this? Having a similar issue on my 80.
Is there a certain RPM where the engine comes to life consistently?

So for me, its low on power on pull off and low revs between 1000-2000rpm, so it come to life when the turbo kicks in.

The 1FE-FE motor uses a fuel pump setup with two speeds by a relay controlling to voltage to the pump. At startup and high engine load the pump should operate a full 12 volts otherwise the fuel pump relay routes switches in a resistor to drop the voltage. This is all controlled by the ECM. You can monitor the voltage through the FP pin in the diagnostic connector in the engine compartment. You might be able to correlate the rise in voltage to the "turbo effect". If so then you may have a problem with the fuel pump, relay, resistor or associated wiring.

3200 is where it wakes up.

Okay so should have mentioned that I have the 1HDT engine also with auto box.
@baldilocks what are you running?

I'm still dealing with the power "surge". It comes in around 2600ish RPM's. I've just learned to put up with it. Kinda sucks. I have 4.88's and it still feels like it did with 4.10's until the surge happens...

Taking my cruiser in this week to have a compression test, check the injectors, the fuel pump and the turbo. Hopefully I get some answers on it.
