I have been looking around for instructions on how to replace the entire power antenna unit motor and all. I'd rather spend 180 bucks for a new one then try and make my 31 year old one with broken gear unit work again. I don't want bypasses or manual replacements. I got those buttons on the dash and I want to use them darn-it! I know it involves fishing the cable through the firewall but I don't have baby hands. I got some kids with those that can help. Some Instructions pretty please.

You don't need small hands, you need a string.

Step 1) Download the service manual from the Resources section, '93 version.

Step 2) Read the section on dash (instrument panel) removal (page BO-62 through BO-67).

Step 3) Remove the stereo, but before you pull it completely out, unplug the antenna from the right rear corner and tie a 3' long string onto it.

Step 4) Open the hood. Unscrew the bezel ring from the fender, using a taped 1/4" screwdriver and your hand, not a hammer. Be careful not to scratch the fender. You can tape the fender if you don't trust yourself.

Step 5) Unscrew the retaining screw on the inner fender, securing the antenna assembly.

Step 6) Pull the antenna lead through the firewall grommet, with the string.

Step 7) Untie the string, retie it onto the new antenna.

Step 8) Reverse the procedure for installation of the new antenna.

NOTE:
You do not have to remove the steering wheel to remove the dash surround behind the steering wheel, but it is helpful to remove the clamshell. There are two machine screws (as opposed to the plastic panel screws elsewhere) towards the rear (the side closest to the seat). Remove these screws first; they hold the clamshell onto the steering column. The four remaining (plastic panel) screws hold the two halves together.

You can remove it the other way, but you should put it together in the reverse order I described. It's a PITA the other way.

You can also remove just the center section, but you risk breaking the plastic if you do it this way.

Also, if your center registers are floppy, now is the time to get a replacement and install that while you have the dash out. It's cheap and snaps in place.

It's also the time to replace the incandescent bulbs with LEDs, if you want. You really don't want to be pulling that dash apart more than you have to.

Good stuff to help above already. Here's another tip. Get some vinyl coated stainless steel cable (thin as you can find it, but should be 1/8" or less) and use it for the pull back in. Use the string as above but at the end using Gorilla tape or super heavy duty equivalent, tape the string to the end of about 3' of cable, then tape the end of the cable to the coax plug. You should be able to snuggle the cable against the skinny pin in the middle of the plug and then using the Gorilla tape around it to make as thin, but secure, merger of the cable and coax as possible. This should make re-entry as easy as possible.

Thanks! You guys are awesome! I have had the dash apart a few times already installing a new stereo, replacing bulbs, and installing a center diff switch so that part shouldn’t be too difficult. Is there a grommet between the firewall? When trying to repair the original I could not get the cable to budge at all to give me more slack. Also what antenna assembly should I order? Can I order a later years antenna assembly so that replacing the mast is easier in the future?

Yes, there is a grommet; the string will get you through it, after you unplug the lead from the stereo. You can either use a good knot, or tape or both (I do both, unless I have the passenger side dash apart, then it's unnecessary). Tape keeps the connection from snagging behind the glovebox, the knot keeps them together.

Order the antenna for the '95-'97, 86300-60050; yours isn't available anyway.

I usually order parts from Dave Stedman at Japan4x4, but Toyota has a shipping ban on electric antennas in Japan, so, since he buys parts in Japan, he can't get them.

My new antenna assembly came with a new gromet on the wire. Once I had it fished in a firm pull on the cable from the inside popped it into place.

Hmmmm...partsouq.com doesn't seem to be able to get them either. Been checking them regularly for the

that I need for my 96 LX 450. I've already tried a

I can't get it to operate properly with the memory system that is in the LX 450 and the 97 80 series.

The price has doubled since I bought one two months ago. Sheesh.

I got the -60050 on eBay new for 137 bucks.

This doesn't replace the whole system like he asked

I would pull the fender that's the easiest way in my opinion

Exactly what part of "the whole system" was omitted? The antenna assembly is a single unit held in place by a single bolt and a single nut.

I'm all for doing more than is minimally necessary, but you'd have to put a gun to my head to get me to remove a fender to replace an antenna.

Agreed. Pulling the fender requires cutting all of the body seam sealer that connects it to the inner fender. Thats a couple hour job to take it off and put it back on correctly. Pulling the wire with a string takes maybe 20 minutes.

I’ll pass on removing the fender. But yeah, just trying to feel for the grommet required me to contort my arm and cut up my wrist on the sharp edges of the fender hole it’s located in so I understand the reasoning. Back to my plan of child labor with baby hands and nimble fingers!

I think if you open the front passenger door the gromet is visible/accessible, but it has been a while since I was working in that area.

I reached way up behind the glovebox and I think I might feel the wire. I will try working on it next week when I get the new antenna and have some time.

Hoping somebody can help me with this same project as I am stuck. Does the new unit plug directly into the back of the stereo? Maybe I bought the wrong one. The cable does not look long enough to reach the stereo as it is attached at the bottom and only has 4 inches or so after the grommet. It also has a clip after the grommet. I assume that plugs into the firewall behind the glove box. How much of the components under the dash should I remove to access the antenna wire? Thank you for any help you can give.

Yes, it plugs into the lower right corner, as you're facing the stereo.

The correct part number is 86300-60050.

You only "have to" remove the dash panel, but removing the glovebox is helpful, unless...

you have also only removed the stereo and not pulled the old antenna cable out of the dash yet. If you haven't...

tie or tape a piece of sting about three feet long onto the plug end of the old cable. Then use the old cable to fish the string out through the firewall. Tape or tie the new cable plug end onto the string and reverse the process.

Hi, I have an 89 Land Cruiser, and I need an antenna mast. What website would you recommend buying a replacement from? Thank you.
