Thinking of getting rid of my 89 ext. cab longbed v6 toyota. It has 220,000 miles on it. Leaks around the head gasket. Little patch of rust where the exhaust comes out, but I hate the engine NO power. typical v6 power problem I hear.
Whats your guys opinions on this truck.

Hi, and welcome! :flipoff2:

Can you twist a wrench? If so, why not get a rebuild kit from www.engnbldr.com for @$400. That, plus your machine shop costs and a few more incidentals, and you have a totally fresh motor.

Of course, this decision could only be based on the actual condition of the rest of the truck, but for under a geezel your motor/power problem will go away.

Hell replacing it!! I got 2 Jeeps, a BIG Blazer , and a spanking new FJ, thanks left coast for the link. Cause you know if Iget rid of it I will need a pickup for something.

Trade one of the heeps to someone for a 4.3 chevy conversion. Then it'll move right along.:D

Is it 4wd?

Does it still run?

Ex cab and Long bed

Look, Toyota trucks just plain rule if its 4wd  just drive it till it quits :confused: wont cost a thing till then ex, G.T.O as some one put it, Gas, Tires & Oil.............

Is this your first Toyota? (sounds like it) Then NO one can "tell" you.

If money is just burning a hole in your pocket convert it to 3.4 or 4.3 you got the trann$/ D.T for it.

If not proper preventative maintenence will have it out lasting any thing else you got not Toyota, but then again it dosent have 500h.p :frown: :crybaby:

Its already got one helova head start

Yeah long bed well 6.5 feet and ext. cab,NOT my first toyota TnT, well it is if I dont count the 4 runners and one other SR5 truck. BTW as before no rust, great shape.

why is everyone here so biased agaisnt jeeps?I have seen so many xj's with over 200,000 it makes my head spin.that 4 liter motor seems bullet proof, not to mention gobs of power.

Try owning one.

Bullet-proof, no...bullet-riddled is prolly closer to the truth. 200,000+ mile straight 6 motors could have been rebuilt twice, easily. But the motors are the strength of the vehicles

Fun to drive, especially in the 5-speed, but those jeeps start to fall apart after 5 or 6 years, which is why you can get '99-'00 Cherokees for $2000 or less.

i do own one,98 xj classic,185k never did anything except brakes and tires.my sister has a 91 170k,never did anything,co-worker has a 93 with 275k,never did a thing to it.the motors are bullit proof,of all the people i know with them i have never heard of anyone having any trouble with the motors.the 4 liter a variant of the amc straight six which has a proven track record with taxi cabs(checker)is known for longevity.the reason they are cheap isnt because they are junk it is because the market is flooded.gotta love the solid front axle to.jeeps have their advantages,if only they still made a pickup varient.start to fall apart is that why you still see 88 cherokees still running around?C'mom!!!at the garage i used to work at I regularly sreviced many in the 200k mark,i even saw one come in with 380k one time.I asked the guy how he got it that far and he said I dont know just change the oil every three months.as far as winter traction i dont think i have been in a better vehicle i love the select-trak.didnt the grand cherokee win 4wheel offroad 4x4 of the year like 10 times?dont get me wrong i am not a die hard jeeper but i am not a die hard toyota guy either.all manufacturers have their strong points.

I have a 97 Grand Cherokee and I spend a lot more time under its hood than I do with my Toy.

But I do enjoy the power from the 5.2L...

Unless you do all the work yourself aside from the machining, rebuilding the 3.0 could cost as much as swapping in a junkyard 3.4 v6. If you dont have a knock and haven't run it for a while with milkshake in the lower end you probably could just use head gaskets/head rebuilds. If it's a clean truck and you like it fix it, if not there are plenty of people who would take it off your hands and probably let you keep the 3.0 for free. Then you could use it to replace one of your 258's or whatever is in those Heeps. Congrats on the FJ, thats probably why you don't care to fix this truck.

I gotta slip in one heep comment lol, in the shop I worked at (I've only worked in one full service repair shop) I'd say 90% of my job was doing crank sensors and panhard bars on Cherokees, and oil cooler lines on S10 Blazers. Ok I'm done now. Oh yeah, and I think I fixed 1-2 ford ranger rear ends a month.
