A friend brought his 1988 FJ62 over to the garage for some maintenance. We changed out the diff fluids, adjusted the backup light switch so the lights came on in reverse, installed some bushings on the linkage from the shifter to get a tighter operation. I test drove this bone stock vehicle, (he is the original owner) and it seems lathargic. I own a '76 FJ40 and it seems to run alot better than his ride. I am thinking that maybe after 213,000 miles, the cats are clogged? He has not done anything but regular maintenance and stuck with the origninal tire size. Vehicle always fires right up and idles smooth. Maybe I am used to the 2bbl carb vs. the early style fuel injection. Anyone with an FJ62 in similiar condition please chime in.

hahaha slap a 4 speed behind it and buckle up...that's what I did. I LOVES ME MY 3FE!!!s

Has he complained about lack of power? They're not the most lively responsive rigs to begin with. The automatic really makes them feel gutless. I have one, but I swapped to a Chevy engine trans and case. The engine had 313,000 miles on it when I pulled it out, still ran good and I think it's a good engine but that auto trans just kills it. If he hasn't noticed a difference that's probably just the way it is and your not used to it.

  • the 2F is a torqy sumbich, tho

If it won't hold to at least 3200 rpm before upshifting when floored, you need to adjust the transmission throttle cable tighter. Advancing the timing beyond factory spec helps too. Have the valves been adjusted lately?

They're relatively slow to get up to speed, for sure. Consider that the 150 HP engine +auto tranny is pushing a heavy, tall truck.

Have you ever driven a 3.0 auto 4Runner before? They're called the 3.slow, but their HP/weight ratio is superior to the FJ62.

Don't think my 62 is slower accelerating than my old '76 FJ40 though, and the 3FE is much smoother than the 2F was.

So yeah, maybe something is amiss.
