My 88 FJ62 just plain won't start sometimes. It doesn't even try to turn over. All the electric comes on, but it won't start. I usually wait about 5-10 minutes and retry it. Then it starts. Sometimes it is an hour. Any thoughts?

Is the starter clicking? Does is start after waiting 5 minutes after driving it, in other words is it hot when you're trying to start it the fist time and then cooling down? If it's hot, and cooling it down allows it to start, then it's likely the starter. Other things to check would be your terminals on the battery, and it could also be your ignition switch.

If you turn the key, and don't hear any click, but the volt meter dips and the idiot lights dim, take a lug wrench, or hammer or whatever other metal object is handy and tap on the starter and then try it. If it now starts, you are due for a starter rebuild.

Similar problem on my 60 with 383 SBC, was bad connections and old brital battery cables(ground went to exhaust manifold) Replaced and moved the ground fired right up.

Test the fuel pump.

Wow! Great. Thanks for all the great tips. I haven't had time yet to look at them all but hopefully this weekend. Hasn't done it in about a week. To answer Satchel's question, no it isn't hot except for the fact that we are in Phoenix! I swear it has to do with the AC. I don't think that I have ever had it happen unless the AC is on when I try to start it. I got my wife hooked on that trick too this week but it probably isn't related.

Clean the connection at the transmission for the NSS. Sometimes, so much current is lost between your key switch and the NSS that it no longer has the capability to drive the starter solenoid. Mine was intermittent in this matter.
