So, just for grins, I put in my '21 LC into Kelley Blue Book to see what the trade in value is. It came back with $87-90k! I leased this vehicle in November of last year and my lease buy out is $77k. These are really weird times if I have $10k 'equity' in a vehicle lease after 9 months. Is this KBB number even remotely close to accurate? Has the used car market become this over-heated?

My buddy is a Toyota dealer. Says it’s nuts.
4runners and Tacoma’s are selling for much more then what lease buy out all day. Same with purchases from a year ago too.

He’s saying 10-15% more.
But only problem is you can get into a new car once you sell yours….

I would ask if after sales tax and new license are you really ahead or perhaps just even with a vehicle with less miles? This doesn't take into account any mods/upgrades that one may have made.

I think it’s just a generalization and not every example is the same. But people can get rid of a lease and end up with money in their pocket or have been trading in an barely used car for more then they paid.
But as I stated then you go from a seller in a great market to a buyer in a really bad market.

Well, i just bought extended warranty for my 2019 LC before factory warranty expires…so, i guess that i can’t sell my LC for $125k like i had hoped. :D

That's the catch.

It's a sellers market. If you are only selling without replacing the vehicle there is a strong chance today you will actually make money on a car purchase. Insane right?! But any profit you capture is lost if you are replacing it with another vehicle unless you downgrade significantly. And even then you are going to be paying a premium for a lesser vehicle. There was a split second where I thought of selling my LC because of the value increase and offers. But quickly realized I am going to have to replace this rig. Build it up again. And it would end up costing me a lot more when all is said and done.

If I had 3 "toys" right now I would absolutely sell one or two and wait a year or so for prices to settle back to normal. And then find a new toy. At that point, yes, there would be some profit on the table. Which I would blow on better toys. ;)

That's where I am. I sold my ZL1 Camaro track toy but it sucks waiting on things to normalize to buy back in. Probably should've sold my RV and diesel truck as well but I suck at letting toys go LOL.

Armchair economist in me aside, I would never sell one of the last USA LCs!!!!

The dealer I bought my '21 H.E. from in December at msrp is now leaving vm and texts about wanting to buy it back. First off, they must not realize that I'm three states away. I was tempted to throw out a sky high number, but I probably still wouldn't sell it. I'm slowly working on building it out.

Wow that's annoying. It's different if you bring it in for service and they make you an offer. For them to cold call/text is just outrageous to me.

A few years ago I had two separate attempts to buy my fully built 200 by a local Toyota dealership while doing basic service. No pandemic shortage required… :)

I didn’t let it get to a dollar figure…but they wanted it. Probably not for resale though.

I traded a '19 for a '21 due to last year, etc. Love it!!!

Having said that, some of the prices I see would make me consider selling it....but it would have to be a big number!

Its crazy but think about it. We have one of the last models of the most iconic vehicle event built!! (a little biased) but true!!! I got offered $95k in the parking lot of Walgreens in Orlando last week-true story. He waited for me to come out and gave me his number and said if you want I will wire you the funds when you are ready. I told him thx but I am not selling now or ever. He has tried to buy a new one but when he calls a dealer they say the price, sometimes over 100k and its take it or leave it as the dealer will never see another new LC.Crazy times for sure!!!

I recall a 4wheeler article on the owner of the last FJ40 (1984, Green) sold in the U.S.A.

So, automotive version of “indecent proposal”?

Hmmm if someone propose $95k for my 2019 with 30k miles? That will make me blush and it would make me think about my current relationship with my LC….
