I have an '86 Toyota Pickup SR5 Extended Cab. Like any good Toyota, it's proven worthy with only minor problems and regular maintenance.

I recently replaced the brake pads, and everything seemed fine. I also just cleaned out my carb. However, when I'm running the a/c, and I brake, I'm still hearing and feeling grinding, a lot like the grinding when the brakes were nearly metal-to-metal. ???

Also, and this has been happening since the brakes were replaced, there is a slight ticking coming from the engine. I only hear it when i'm braking, but, yea....it could be a loose belt, but I just replaced all those, along with the alternator.

Any opinions and/or advice is greatly appreciated. This is starting to be a huge annoyance, and I'd like to get it fixed. Thanks!

But you don't hear grinding when the AC is off???

no, not when the a/c is off...i dont understand it....

A couple of things, you may want to check those pads and makse sure you do not have one of them in wrong. I did that once in a car, a honda, and could not figure out what in hell was going on i.e. metal backing plate against the rotor. Apart from that, there is not much that create a 'grinding' sounds when the breaks are applied unless of course you put the caliper components together wrong i.e. anti rattle springs and the like.

In regard to the slight ticking, it could a whole host of things. How long have you had this truck? If just a recent purchase, you might begin to -notice ALL kinds of stuff-in particular since you fixed the grinding and your mind is on "fixing" Ticking is usually valve related. Have you adjusted your valves lately? If not, need to ( :

Mine has a problem with the AC being on and the idle is not staying constant when depressing the brake pedal. For example, when you turn on the AC on, the idle goes up and vise versa when it's off. Anyhow, the idle will go up and down only when the brake pedal is pressed. Once you let go of the brake pedal, idle goes back to normal while AC is on. I have not trouble shot yet. My first guess is the brake booster has some sort of leak. And something else I want to look at is the AC clutch while the AC is on.....I want to visually see if it is energizing/deenergizing because that's what sounds like its doing.

Thanks 2ndGenToyotaFan.....I just read the other post. I makes sense, I just did a tune up. It may just an adjustment on the idle cause it works find when the AC is in off......even when you press on the gas pedal.

Yep, the idle adjustment located on top of throttle body fixed it.

Yep....that was the fastest fix ever for me. Thanks
