Hello everyone,

I've previeously owned 2 1st generation 4Runners. One had the 22RE & the other had the 3.0L but both had 5spd manual transmissions. I'm planning on looking at an 86 with the 22RE/auto trans. I've never driven one. Are they much slower than the 5spd version? Is the gas mileage worse? Is it easily swappable?

Thanks

I have a 87 1st gen 4 runner with a 22rei it has the automatic with overdrive and the ECT (elec trans control).

It sucks!!! It doggs all of the power that that engine has. I love automatics but they need a resonable amount of power to run them. My truck is a garage kept highly maintianed queen compared to what anyone will generally find. It has been inpecably maintained, but it is still a dog.

That transmission also has a different transfer case opposed to the manual. The whole truck also has much higher gear ratios do to the automatic.

Maybe a gear change would help some but the fact is "You can't polsih a turd"

Thanks for your input guys. Just bought an '86 with a 5spd.

It's been in TX it's entire life, has no rust, working a/c, 170K & cheap. This will by my 3rd one and am glad to have one in the stables again.
