My son just bought an '84 and it won't idle unless the choke is pulled out. The PO said that it had a manifold leak, but we sprayed starter fluid all around the manifold and couldn't detect a leak. Vacuum is steady at 10" which would indicate a vacuum leak; maybe EGR stuck open?. Compression is 148 - 158 in all cylinders. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We removed the carb and checked the intake manifold - no cracks in the usual spot. Also checked the idle solenoid - it clicks when the ignition is turned on. Any other suggestions please?

Test....Did you block off vacuum robbing parasites as suggested in post #2??

Search for EGR bypass instructions. Cured my problems combined with replacing all the vacuum hoses with the silicon hose. If the bypass test does not work just hook it back up like it was, no harm done..it's only the top hose (on the EGR) pulled off and plugged with a screw..

the Carb hoses along the air rail were toast (literally) after I put the new ones on my idle problems went away..mine is a 84 too.

Thanks all. Disconnected the EGR valve, blocked off the line to the intake manifold, and the problem was cured so it looks like the EGR valve was stuck open.

AHA!!!!

So it was you that bought the green one in Fairfax with the bumpers!

I believe you got quite a steal my firend.

Steal? I have no idea what you're talking about! Matt is thinking of selling his 4Runner and using the 60 as his DD.

That thing was worth more than $2000 even if it had no engine. And it turns out to be a bad EGR! Score!

How does it look in person? Were there any other other goodies on it not mentioned in the ad? (I saw a button on the dash - wondered if it might have had a locker)

Congrats to you and your son.

No lockers, but it does have an ARB on the front and a swing out Kaymar on the back. The paint job was a color change from brown but they did a good job at cutting in everything but thr firewall. It looks like the carpet has been replaced, the seats, dash, etc. are great, frame is great, new Toyota carb, pioneer head unit and Kenwood amp, ... Nice find for a Cruiser guy.
