I had picked up a free 8274 in working condition, or so I was informed, but it was missing the brake pawl. Yesterday I scored two complete, but both with broken foot mounts, 8274's and today prepared to swap over the brake pawl from one.
After cleaning my working winch up, I discovered why the brake pawl was missing. Deep inside the cylindrical extension that the brake pawl assembly mounts to, the casting where the bolt threads into is busted. I would assume there is no easy way to repair that, and keep looking for another winch?
At least I have lots of pare parts now.
Also in the second picture, what the heck is that protrusion on the casting I am pointing to? The other 2 winches I picked up do not have it.

What are the foot mounts? You could probably make 1 good winch from the three you have depending on where the "foot mount". Your speaking of is located. I currently have two of my own and a friends 8274 sitting at the bead blaster.

I never get cool free stuff like this!

I sent an email to Warn asking about that funky casting protrusion in the above picture, here is the response:

"Good question. That casting piece was something we did in the M8274's early days. It was originally going to be used for something, but no one around here can recall back that far for what that something was for, most likely a oil fill hole. But it was never used, so we eventually took it out of the casting mold in the late 70's. "

Think that was for the old style band type brake
Maybe for the pull cable to engage the brake
Couldn't have been for a shield over the brake
People were smart enough to not stick fingers in there
In the 70s
