I got stuck today in some pretty nasty mud, its been raining for 2 months. I put the warn on a month ago and it has only been used a couple of times, brand new. The PO put a new battery in the 40 so the mechanic said to run it till it needed to be replaced, just keep the motor running while im using the winch. Well, when i was trying to pull myself out and the cable got tight and started to take the load, it was like the winch was running out of power and wouldnt pull. I ended up draining the battery, and couldnt start the rig. Got a ride to town and picked up an optima redtop. The 40 fired right up, so i started running the winch. I pulled for a min and stopped to check things out, when i tried to pull again the winch went click. Just clicked once and nothing else. So i checked the battery terminals to make sure they were tight. Still nothing. So i grabbed the wires that come out of the top of the winch and wiggled um a bit. The winch started working again. Again when i stopped and tried to start the winch, it clicked. So once again i wiggled the wires and it started working. I couldnt visually inspect the connections cause the winch was covered with spray from the mud.

Should i look for loose wires, or could there be a short somewhere? Its brand new, it couldnt be the motor, could it?

Anybody else had this problem?

Thanks for any replies

I know theres another thread with the same title, i thought it might be a different issue since its new. Could mine also be a ground issue?

Very well could be a loose ground wire when you wiggle them. On the other hand, it could be any loose wires from the sounds of things.

I don't have any experience with any Warn newer than 1983, but I assume that the top of the solenoid pack should come off easily. Then check for connections that are loose. If moving the wires is the issue, then try to get them tied off and tightened down so they are where they need to be and won't move before you put the cover back on.

Any electric winch is only as good as the cabling and controls feeding it.

Sorry I'm not sure either but with the old one's the solenoids are earthed through the 2 stainless straps onto the motor this was the problem with mine. Who installed this??? sounds like it was done by a garage if it is a faulty wire, which you can prove by moving them I'd take it back. And watch out high amps and a loose conection will get hot!!! Good luck and I'll kepp watching to find out what the issue is.

I bought it online and had a shop install it. I havent had time to look at it yet, but will let you guys know. Thanks for the replies
