what size lift? What are your thoughts?

OME heavy up front, still need to install the extra leaf to make up for the extra weight of the om617. Rears are just med-duty springs. Since it hasn't been driven yet, it hasn't settled, i'm expecting it to drop, i hope. The final product is higher than i thought it would be. Now on to putting the engine in. My adapter plate is still being made/shipped.

updates coming.

It looks great!
For what it's worth, even with sagged out springs, these babies ride high, that's just the way they're designed. One of the reason first-gens become popular wheeling rigs, they're designed around clearance.

If you are worried about stability, try to keep the stock sway-bars, they really increase stability. I can take 25MPH corners at 55 easily with my 83, in fact, it handles better than my Oldsmobile did.

The 4x4labs adapter came on saturday:bounce::bounce2::clap:

At last, took a long time, i was expecting it in dec/jan.

I took the mercedes flywheel off today and am getting it match balanced at the machine shop to the new toy flywheel.

I put the transmission on anyway because i need to start doing mounts. I took off the motor mount arms from the om617 today. The four protruding bolts are not too far off from the stock toyota arms. I also have some 2 inch square 1/4" tubing butted up against some 1/4" plate that I got out of a scarp pile. I may just drill the mercedes bolt pattern into that butted plate (engine side) and then either use 4bt mounts on top of the frame rail, or cut diagonally to match the slope of the toyota mount. I don't have the engine in the body yet for a mock up because i'm still figuring how i'm going to be lifting that beast in, my current crane is def not high enough, i may have to set up a pulley system of the shop roof cross beams to get the clearance i need.

I want to hear some opinions about motor mounts possibilities, this is going to be a challenge for me (not much of a fabricator yet).

So the options right now is the square tubing pictured used with 4bt mounts or stock toyota mounts

or
stock toyota mounts only (depends on if i can get the mercedes engine side hole pattern into the toyota motor side), and also on width and reach issues, I don't know the difference in block width between the om617 and 20r.

Nice build... I'm jealous.

Just tot I'd post up some general stuff I've found in my search for a cheap Merc OM swap.

1st off, Merc AT's, as I'm finding DO NOT have overdrives. So you need a really high gear if you want to use it...

And 2nd off, I've found a way to use a Merc or any other Trans you want....

OTT ALWAYS A SOLID CHOICE !!! --

And so-far the highest gears for a 4WD I can find are the old 79-81(?) 3:90 gears.

No comment yet on a V6 or Turbo 2WD... As soon as I find out, I'll know:D

Oh, and here's a good read on how to cool it. Via Pirate.

Need some help with an obscure radiator request...

Oh, and IF you're using a R series (They say they're too long) The R154 has a .75ish OD ratio and the Supra boys can get a .66 I believe Via MArlin Crawler:D

0.66 5th Gear for R154 Transmission

And... A great read.

Hilux

thanks for the cooling link. thats perfect!!!

The om617 is being used with the w56. i swapped axles out of a 85 4runner with only 37000 original miles, it also donated the w56 for this project. Because the benz revs high i'm not at all worried about gearing should be fine. I'll put 33" tires on aswell which will help.

anyone know if ill be able to get away with using the stock mechanical fan? I'll try and mock up today.

motor mount ideas

Any takers on motor mount ideas?

I'll be needing to lengthen and shorten my drive shafts, w56 is longer.

Any suggestions on pricing and good shops in seattle?

my helper has a 89 Xcab that he is wanting to stick a diesel into. this is looking like a good option.
thanks for posting the thread up.
cheers

Here are mine. They are 1.5" rubber bushings that I got from the local spring shop.

I don't know if you have it or not, but if you have a v6 or auto 3 core radiator available, you should be able to use that. Also, you can use the stock mechanical fan, just make sure what ever radiator you use won't hit the fan. I have a volvo 240 radiator and the way I have it mounted, the mech fan would take out the fitting to the expansion tank.

I used Cummins 4BT solid mounts which are also a very common Dodge smallblock isolator. I'm happy to report how it performs once I get it running. Softer is better in my opinion because these things really like to rattle around, particularly at idle...

A much over due post.

This project has moved to portland and has gone through a bunch of insufficient fund cycles.

I visited my friend who owns the truck in portland in April and worked on it again because she can't find the confidence to finish the small odds and ends.

I had to move back to Canada for visa reasons a year and half ago.

Before I left I fabbed motor mounts out of square tubing and utilized stock toyota rubber mounts and toyota block side mounts butted up to flat plate drilled with mercedes bolt pattern. Custom hung tranny cross member with ubolts to frame. I did all the fabbing in the most pitiful conditions in a (dark wet ) hole in the wall shop on upper queen anne during the 2011 winter/spring. It took me days what could have been done in a couple of hours with a properly equipped shop. The project right from the get go was very shade tree and totally time inefficient and thus in the end quite expensive (i've come to realized this working on other projects in proper equipped working space :) The suspension is all done and it rocks. The truck will be riding on some aluminum 16" rims off a gm vehicle.

I did the following over the past year on visits down there:

Drive shafts lengthened and shortened by shop in george town seattle. Installed.

Volvo radiator installed with two massive 16" electric pusher fans (flex-lite racing fan).

Toyota starter installed.

Oil pressure gauge installed in stock oil line in filter housing.

Heater hoses plumbed.

Gas tank drained

Fuel lines finished.

Down pipe installed (through spring and frame and then down the frame rail).

Gear shifters installed with custom cover plates

She still needs to hook up 22re vaccum solenoid, and oil cooler lines, and get a diesel filler neck.

I hope she finds the courage to finish it. ITs almost there.

I have started my own om617 power swap into an 84 Xtra cab. See this thread in the diesel section. I'll hope fully have her running in a week.
