Very rare and expensive Cruiserparts.net has one, $1,200 but it is a complete axle. Has anyone ever tried to adapt FJ60 backing plates to an earlier rear axle?

I know it's a rare bit. I had one years ago and sold it to a guy in ga for peanuts. :(

I'm wanting to put a split case in my 73. I'd like to use rear drums with the parking brake ala 60/62. I have several complete 60 rear axles.

How about narrowing a 60 housing? Has anyone pulled that off?

I've contemplated that option as well. Can be done on an axle jig but I'd highly recommend using an inner sleeve and a series of plug welds. The short side is the same so you'd only have to narrow the driver side by about 2". I have a pretty good idea of how to make it work right and even be able to supply a "kit" for the DIY guys out there.

Wish I had more R&D time to tinker with projects like this one ......

Have you thought about using a 7x series rear axle housing (FF)? It is narrower than the 60 rear axle housing. IIRC, it is a slight bit longer than the 40 series but a much better fit and already set up for leaf springs?

Just an idea.

If Don did the welding, it'd be the strongest thing on the truck!

I have used Georg's spring perch kit on a 60 rear axle to put a full width 60 axle under my 40. It worked very well! I actually liked the extra width in function as well as form. Those are 33/12.50's mounted on 8" wide rims. The axle puts about 1.50" extra width on each side of the body.

I talked to my buddy Dave ( 4+ products ) about narrowing the 60-series housings tonight. We both agreed that my idea should work so we plan on pursuing it right after New Years. I'll start a thread in the 40 forum when I have something to report.

I considering this, but was concerned about my 31s hitting the fenders. (stock suspension) I also wasn't sure how it would track with the rear axle being wider than the front. (ih8spacers)

I found a NHRA chassis builder with an axle jig. He said it would be no problem to narrow 60 rear housings 2" on the long side and install 40 perches. Today, I dropped the 2x 60 rears + a 40 housing for reference. Once I get mine installed and tested, I'll have the other available for sale.

Funny you should mention that. We cut the first housing apart on Monday. Our neighbor has an axle jig also but we're waiting for a machinist buddy to make us a pair of pucks to make sure the housings are perfectly concentric. And we're building a jig to make sure the perches end up exactly where they need to be.
