Wanted 81+ fj40 bare rear axle housing

Looking at the project more and more it became apparent that a DIY kit wouldn't be the way to go. The tolerances and tooling required are well beyond the average Joes' abilities. And when it comes down to it, the way we're going to narrow these is simpler than the first idea I had. It won't require an inner sleeve although there's some machine work involved.

I don't know if i'm an average Joe but I'd like to try.
 
The 40 long axle fit perfectly in the narrowed 60 rear. I'm going to drive it a few hundred miles to see how it does on and off-road.

If all is good, I will have narrowed housings for sale. I have one on the shelf and left a couple more at the fabrication shop.

We just got back from KOH having been gone most of the week so obviously there's no progress on my end. Glad you were able to get two of them completed.

@mel lowe Do you have any narrowed rear housings with perches for the earlier ('71) FJ40s?
