Update time.

So i decided to order the toyota bolts for the tub and 70$+ 12 days later, here they are. I really wanted all the tub fastener to be the same and for 2 bolts....

While I was waiting for bolt, decided to go ahead and figure out the rockers.

I needed a bender, so a couple pieces of angle iron and some imagination

The final product

Then the wells from PACOL showed up. They look nice but the proof will be in the fit. All I'm missing is the floor from EBI and I'll have it all.

DSC00767.jpg

So I fiddled with the sill to get it right and after a lot of Hummin' and Haawin' I just went for it. Welded the bolts in the rectangular tube good and tight. Next problem was to be the captive nuts behind the sill skin so I welded in 1/4" doublers. Plan is to drill and tap when fitting up the spare carrier.

And finally getting the uprights in. The relief profile is not the same as before so i hope it works out with the hardtop.

What kind of "imagination" did you use? Looks to clean to be a hammer-

Looking great- keep it up!

Managed to find some time today to get some welding in. Found out yesterday that the garage needs a new roof.... Big puddles in the vapor barrier. I've never done a flat roof before.... Any volunteers?

So I lined up the doors as best I could

DSC00778.jpg

And Ended up with this.... on both sides.

DSC00779.jpg

which after some small patches and sculpting looks like this:

DSC00781.jpg

And then I got excited so I mocked up the new quarter, which will go in soon.

DSC00782.jpg

All I need now is the floor from EBI and a new roof.....

Finally moving at a decent pace! Got the driver's side quarter welded in. Went well and the bondo shouldn't be more than 1/16 to an eight thick. Turns out the cutout for the marker light is wrong, so more needless work there. It was a bitch to cut around the fuel filler since the previous repair used a lot of weld.

The round corners for the sill that i bought just don't match up. going to make custom one i guess. Lesson learned: next time shop better for parts.

I am still waiting for the floor panel from EBI, cant wait to get it so i can fit the wells in properly.

Transmission is on it's way, 280 buck later.

Pics!

Alright. It's been awhile.

the past few weeks were busy with house guests, work, home repair and World of tanks online game. It really doesn't help the motivation to hit the tools.

That being said, project is moving forward!! I got the floor from EBI and it came bent. Not a big deal, but it's disappointing seeing how you pay for something new and the first thing is you have to fix it. 4wheel auto cut me a deal on a new fender to replace the dented one but i'm still 200$ out of pocket. Now I've paid 500$ for 2 right fenders (Toyota oem) and one is dented. Hopefully someone will buy it and help cushion the account.

Transmission arrived last week. The input shaft has some play in it confirming the need for a rebuild. I spoke to Louis Skebo about a shop in Ottawa to rebuild it and he urged me to do it myself. Anyone got pullers to lend? I will tackle it once the frame is painted during reassembly.

Since last post, I finished the quarters, fabricated and installed the right rocker, removed the old floor and prepped the new one for install. That's about it!

PICS!!

The sill extensions to support the quarters that came with the sill kit were crap. I fabbed some up from 16 gauge.

That all for now.....;)

Hi folks.
The roof doesn't leak! I'm quite glad about that. Now I can concentrate on the cruiser, or so I thought. Actually been doing more yard work than I like to admit, but it's all gotta get done.

Ok. in hindsight, I should have installed the wells first and then the floor. Would have been overall easier. The floor went in easy enough, as did the driver side wheel well. Trouble started with the passenger side well: I just couldn't get the thing to line up. Seems like the panel was too long on the top. After a few hours of cursing, I bit the bullet and started cutting. after 6 hours, it looked as it should.

Then I notice what a crappy job i did on the drivers side.

Another day of cutting, welding and sculpting brought things into shape. so now I'm waiting to get my hands on some c channel to make roll bar supports. as soon as I get those in, I can finish the captive nuts, minus the rear doors, and take the tub off. The supports welded in by Pacol were in the wrong place, so I ended up chopping most of them out. You'd think for 500$ they could at least not put them there in the first place rather than have to do it twice.

In prep for that, I managed to get all but one of the body bolts out easily. I will look into having some made since specter is off their rockers on pricing for these bolts.

Having researched pit-man arm removal, I was preparing myself for a fight. Every few days for a month I have been dousing it in PB blaster. So today, I put a puller on it expecting to have to add tension every day. the thing came right off. One shot. If only it were all that easy!

Finally, I took the cruiser out to get some sun while I cleaned the garage. much needed!!

Your really getting into it mate. I'd like to have some of your equipment and fab skills! Keep the pics coming...:)

Thanks for all the support! It's really motivating to read your comments and encouragements.

I have really been dragging my ass on getting all the captive nuts in before i take the tub off. I wasn't going to do anything about the roll bar supports but my conscience kicked in and now i got some spanky brackets that will hold for sure. I went to the metal store, got some 3/16 flat bar and welded away. Once the brackets were built, mocked them up and drilled. then welded the nuts, painted in between where there will be no access and final instal/weld to truck. Took forever! All i have left is the door and I don't know what to do. Do I weld nuts to the sheet metal and forget it? or do I try and rescue the original door captive nut things and hope they work out? Also bought:D the steel to make a work table so I can dismantle that trans.

I'm thinking along the lines of rustic green.... the beige just doesn't pop....

PICS!!

Drilled the holes for the catch and bumper then threaded m8x1.25. Worked great!

Great work there. I have been secretly passively looking for a 42 to rebuilt to close to stock. not a secret anymore

Seem like all the ones I come across are in need of the same treatment as yours. At least the ones in my bud-jet anyway.

Keep up the progress reports

Looking good man! Keep up the pace and you'll be on to paint work in a heartbeat! Then you can do mine......

Busy summer....

Ok. I'm really sorry I've kinda abandoned this thread for a while.... But i got some more pics to make up for it!

It's been busy. More than I would have liked it to be. I had 11 weeks with little or no work in the spring which generally left me pretty broke. The solution, of course, was a lot of work thru June, July and August. After spending a month in japan and doing some tractor work, i finally had some time this weekend to tackle the cruiser. Since last time, I've drilled and tapped all the holes for the ambi doors, tire rack, position lights, roll bar, jack holder and probably a few more. Turns out, this is time consuming stuff: get the roll bar, place it, mark it, remove, drill place to check, weld nuts, put back into storage. and this for every part. I guess the pay off is in the final build when it all just goes together.

anyways, I didn't get pics of the doors but pretty much everything else:

All tapped into 1/4 flat bar welded behind.

The PO had drilled holes for acc switches, I'm going to go for the stock look....

Surprise!!!! The tub coming off. I used my rig that hold up my truck cap to lift it off the frame. Instead of the 5 to 1 rope system, I bypassed it with a 1 ton come along. worked great, and lifted it straight up.

Ready fro the next step!

DSC00956.jpg

I found a well referred transmission shop to rebuild my 5 speed, but am wondering if i should just do it myself, for fun sake. On the fence for that one. I've picked a color, cant wait to get to paint!

Anyone have experience with painting a galvanized frame? i'm super temped to galvanize since it's only 400$ and i will never have to think about the frame again, but don't like the look....

I've been keeping at it for the past weeks and finally, the frame is at the paint shop! It's been tough since my trailer broke twice, i "found" a natural gas line while excavating at a client (not a biggie, no one hurt but will cost $$$) and a caliper on my tacoma needed replacing.....

I decided to have the frame and other bits done since the cheapest i could do it for was around 750$, but with galvanizing would be more around 1150$ Paint shop quote me 1200$ with an electro static epoxy primer and topcoat, so can't argue with that! I've also built a table to work on the transmission and other parts as we go.

I'm on the fence about a new suspension, since the one i got works and the expenses are going up. One of the front springs is showing a little separation, but that's it. For now, i'll rebuild the axles and paint them with por 15 since I can always change springs later!

PO did some frame repair with shoddy welding. they didn't move the tub, just buttered it on

Should have a new looking frame soon! Axle time.... Got the marlin kit since i really wanted the seals.

That's it for now!:wrench::wrench::wrench:
