80's theft ??

A friends 62 just got stolen and it got me thinking.

How often do 80's get stolen? I recall hearing a few years back about hondas and Toyotas having "master" keys. Are 80's at risk with these "master keys", do they reset the alarm with the on off, on off "command". I use my "cubbies" for stuff thaqt I don't want to try and replace.

not sure about the alarm stuff as mine is a 92 but I have heard of no master for the 80 series rigs the older toyota barrels were kind of cheesy so if you took a blank and shaved it down it would open about 80% of toyotas you found. I know to try and break in to an 80 takes some doing. I am pretty good with a slim jim but it still took me 30 minutes to break in to mine once I locked myself out.

The other day I came out of the hotel and found my 80 GONE! Went over to the cop in the van, who happended to be napping near by! He told me that more than likely it got towed due to no overnight parking at the meters. After feeling relieved, I was then worried if my drivetrain got damaged in the process. Luckily, everything was fine and I bailed my beloved 80 out of jail for $160. This impound lot in south Chicago was very efficient in the whole process. They even stuck a UPC barcode sticker on the vehicle and scanned me out of the property!

My vehicle was alarmed, doors locked, gears shift was in Park when I picked it up. They used a dolly to completely lift the rear end of the vehicle off the ground. If the thieves used this system, and they prolly do, we'd have no chance in hell recovering our vehicles. How many times have we seen a vehicle's alarm wailing on the back of a flat bed being towed away? Question is, was it getting stolen or towed legally?

As I was parking the 80 the previous night, I was thinking to myself, maybe I should pull the EFI fuse but didn't. From now on, I can at least do that. The aftermarket alarm does have a fuel/starter cutoff relay that I may tap into with my own kill switch. Other than installing a LoJack recovery system I don't know what else is a basic fool proof system.

My sister is working for GMAC. Part of the training program consists of vehicle theft. The 80's are very tough to steal, according to the info. she gave me.

I have 4 of my Cruiser LoJack'd. Connie(the GF) got signed up as a dealer, but she is changing jobs next month, hopefully she can still hook up Cruiserheads with good deals at the new place......but it might take sometime.

look on the third page under “utility vehicles” and “all midsize” they have an extremely high theft cost compared to other vehicles, I would imagine part of this is there is a large market for them and their parts around the world

there are two kinds of car thieves, the neighborhood kids ho want to take a joy ride a hard to steal car will deter them if they do get it they will beat it up and then leave it somewhere, then there are experienced thieves who are usually taking them to be taken overseas. South America likes 4x4 suv's, if these guys get it you will likely never see it again more of a problem in bigger cities I would imagine

in the Seattle/Tacoma area there have been alot of Cruisers stolen in the last few years, but I have yet to hear of a 80 or 100 being stolen. All have been 62(4+) 60's and 40's.

Don't tell me that my pleasure vehicle i recently bought is a hot cake for thieves????!!!!!!!!!!!!! My current vehicle, 1999 Civic Si is already a hot cake for auto theft...twice there's been an attempt to steal it since i bought it brand new. Luckily the Autolock saved me from getting it stolen...Basically a club on the brake or clutch pedal....

No wonder the premium on the LC is $10 more than on my civic each month, even though its 10 6 yrs older. $55/$45

80s used to be pretty high in the top 10of stolen vehicles when i was doing theft claims.
Cars/suvs are desirable when newer as a parts source, or for status among the punks that joyride.
Numerous suvs disappear for "export" to parts unknown. As vehicles get older, or models change, they tend to slip down the charts. One weird example was back in the mid 90s, 84-87 olds cutlass supremes were still in the top 10!
The problem with the cruiser is they maintain or even grow in popularity as they get older which keeps them a target. A good alarm can never hurt.

Nowadays, the 2002- Maximas are popular for quick hits since the h/lamp assemblies are about $750/ ea.

I haven't had the pleasure of having to break into mine(yet)
but from the looks of it, the rear split windows seem like the easier point of entry.
Mine came with "lo-jack" from the PO, but I have been told, you are supposed to have the "battery" serviced??? ???

--whoa dude,uh isnt the 80 "all wheel drive", i know its a viscous coupling but man i wouldnt want them towing mine on anything but a flatbed........

This is interesting becuase when I went through carfax to purchase the cruiser I got, the theft score was super high; apparently cruisers are stolen at a rate many times higher than the average vehicle is

--well my insurance just took a rise,and when i complained to my agent i got the usual, everybody in WV is getting their rates raised,its a statewide thing ya know....and this is with a "name brand" insurance company,Nationwide,and they are "giving" me(their words)discounts for airbag/no accidents/long term customer.....i said sheesh what if i was a "bad" customer?(no "points" on my license either) i have a 12 year old streetbike covered by them but it had to be a "separate" polcy,so no multi vehicle discount there,but i bought a new 4 wheeler in december and i "think" its gonna be on the same one with the streetbike(unless they try to pull a fast one one me,cause thats how it was stated when i discussed it to begin the writeup for it to be added).
so i call around,only to hear that the landcruiser is a "26" whatever that means and cant get written on a new policy by the couple of firms i tried(i lost patience and only tried a couple before giving up).....they all recommended i stay with who i am with now cause "its getting bad out there" and soon nobody in WV will be taking on new customers

--sheesh,i wish i had your rates,my now 8 year old 80 is costing me 155.00 per month for full coverage...ya gotta love a state full of corrupt politicians........before i got the 80 i had a 1999(3 years newer)F250 superduty crewcab/longbed towing behemoth and it was still cheaper than the 80 is now(both agencies i called for new quotes told me they "could" write a policy for the ford,just not the landcruiser....

the rear window looks easy but it is not, the lock hasp is actually pretty well designed to keep people out of it. I had to remove teh belt moulding form the ps front door and go in with a hook over the anti theft bar to get in.

Yeah you might want to call LoJack and they will come out(for $60) and check it out, its recomended to be checked every 2 years. With that being said, they isn't much too it. Yes it has a battery back up, but power normaly comes from the car battery. If for some reason the cruiser sat for more than a few days with a dead battery then its worth having them look at it.

There are ALOT of Lojack owners that don't know they have the unit installed, nice thing about Lojack is there are no fee's......it works forever(as long as there isn't a problem) Its linked to your VIN not to the owner

With a LoJack you don't pay any monthly/annual network fee? That's interesting. In Canada, there are similar systems, but you have to pay a monthly network fee (something like $10). I think I've invented an idea to have a 'free' tracking system - something I plan to try this summer.

I also laugh at US insurance rates - I pay something like 4,500 per year for two cars!

yep, no fee with a Lojack. there is nothing to monitor unless stolen and when stolen its the units in the cop cars that pick up the signal.....Lojack suplies the cops with the stuff for no cost..

$4500 for ONE Cruiser!? all mine together(and boat and house) cost just a bit more than that!
