I've removed the unnecessary items like most of you but, was wondering if anyone had any other ideas for removing weight from the 80.

  1. 3rd row seats
  2. Stock spare tire bracket
  3. Running boards
  4. Hitch
  5. 2nd row seats
  6. rear heater
  7. REPLACE stock muffler
  8. Stock jack stand & tool kit
  9. Roof rack
    REPLACE Front leather power seats

Anything else?

That big muffler.

Coming from wherever via the mobile

:hhmm: The back half?

But seriously what are your intended purposes? You can do anything from seats to carpet to bob'n it.

Yeah, I know I can go all crazy and remove everything but the drivers seat.

I'm looking for things to reduce weight, increase MPG's and performance.

We all add so much stuff anyway, bumpers, racks, tools, drawers etc. It would be nice to take some stuff off too.

i removed my aftermarket hitch, bumper ends, flares, 2nd and 3rd row seats +seatbelts and brackets. the rear heater and rear carpet will also go. i will be adding bumpers and a sleeping/storage platform and more so i'm trying to lose as much weight as possible. i have weighed everything that came off and will also keep track of what i add. stock rack and rear wing thing will be lost.

Sign up for weight watchers......jenny craig......or just do some cardio.....lots of cardio.....and than perhaps your 80 will get better MPG but I would not count on that but than again more power to you....:bounce::bounce::bounce:

Nice, now that is what I'm talking about. I forgot to mention the hitch. I also take out the 2nd row sometimes but, its a pain to put back in.

How much do you think the rear heater weighs? 20lbs? Taking that out is good on multiple levels.

Small stuff?
Power Antenna
Roof Rack
Stock tool kit and jack if you are lifted and it won't reach
Cell Phone amplifier if LX450
Swap power seats for manual
In the summer pull the doors off like a jeep! :)

I can't believe I actually wasted 5 minutes of my life reading and replying to this post. Dropping 200 lbs of weight on a 5000 lb rig (stock) accounts for about a 4% loss. Wind resistance is a much bigger factor in mileage than overall weight. If you want to go faster and get better mileage, go buy a Rav 4 or 4Runner.

Wheeling w/o a spare tire rates right up there with a jeep running around on 35's and running the stock 29 inch spare on the back = stupid.

Getting rid of the muffler makes driving a sucky and noisy experience.

Rear heat is sometimes nice for those in back and who needs a rear recovery point? You can always impress you fellow wheelers with crawling all the way under you rig to attach a strap to the axle or better yet, the rear sway bar?

Seriously, do you think dropping 200 lbs of sometimes good equipment will really improve your rigs performance to a measureable degree?

I hate to be a dick but I have to agree. There are a lot of great things about our 80's and gas mileage isn't one of them. There isn't really anything you can do about it besides learn to live with it. Just my 2cents...

Not to be a :censor:, but X2 what Adam said.

If you are worried about mileage, sell the 80...

x3...not much you can do to worsen or improve the mileage on these tanks.

The 80 is a "special application vehicle" intended for "other than daily commute".

Part time kit would help, but $$$...shedding those 315's for the stock 275/70's would save 200 lbs in rubber alone, but who wants to do that?:crybaby:

Here's my original sticker. Note the city and highway mileage ratings.

And that's the BEST it ever got!!:eek::eek:

I'm sorry but, I think this forum is about improving our land cruisers??

Last I checked, removing unnecessary items falls into the category of improvement.

And yes, a spare tire is necessary, but the stock bracket, in the stock location is NOT.

And yes, a muffler is necessary but NOT the stock one, have you held one in your hands???? There are lighter options.

The thread title clearly stated the subject of the thread, so stop wasting your own time.

Its people like you that make me not want to waste my time with forums like this.

Compared to other full size SUVs the 80s are actually pretty light at 5K llbs stock weight. You can lose a little bit of weight from there without stripping it down to a shell and you can lose the crap dragging from the roof. The best way to improve mileage is a diesel, but the swap is so expensive you might as well save your money to buy 10 years worth of gas. That's why I decided to turbo the 1FZFE. I'll end up paying about a third with the complete rebuild or less vs the cost of an appropriate diesel swap. Diesels are cool though. Nothing better than being able to run oil or grease through your motor as fuel if fuel at the pump ever becomes unavailable.

Chop & BOB!!!

Doing this will shed a few pounds. :flipoff2:
