Hey everyone,
Coming up to buying my first car and have narrowed it down to an 80 series or a patrol and was hoping to get some opinions on what would be the best buy. The 80 series is 1991 landcruiser gxl with a 1hz engine and has done 618,000 kms. Asking price is $8,500. The patrol is a 2003 ST GU patrol with a zd30 engine, turbo, that has done 248,000 kms. Asking price is $10,000 In terms of mods they're both on par.
What would be best for me for to use as a daily driver and off road?

What answer are you expecting to get on the landcruiser forum...?

Mostly Americans here too so we don’t have experience with patrols.

That landcruiser is way overpriced...

What’s your budget and intent for the vehicle?

The problem is if you compare the same year patrol to landcruiser the landcruiser will generally have a nicer interior and better engine while the patrol has a better chassis and running gear.

However the problem is the landcruisers are way more expensive so you get better value for money with the patrol.

Personally unless you can stretch the budget to say $12-15k and pickup a low km 1HDT, I’d go a patrol.

However keep an eye out, last year I picked up a 92 HDJ80R with a 1HDT, front/rear ARB air lockers, bull bar/winch/roof rack/suspension lift with less than 300,000km for $11,700...

Again it all depends on your budget, intended use and how long you want to keep it.

Edit - as excited as you are try and be patient... there are great deals from time to time but you need to watch and learn the market so you can jump on the right vehicle. I’ve purchased cruisers within 2 hours of them being listed because I knew their value. Anything that’s been on the market for a while obviously isn’t a great deal or someone would have already purchased it.

Between the 2, the Nissan is the better buy. The 80 is overpriced for the mileage--I'm assuming it's 618,000 and not 61,800 km. Fuel economy wise, the Patrol wins. I believe the 1hz will suck an additional 1.5 liters/100km compared to the zd30.

For the sake of we don't get the cool patrols here, I say patrol. From my very limited knowledge they are definitely on par with the 80, if not better in some areas.

Well, technically, we do get the Y62 here as the Armada/QX...

The armada thing is an abomination :) Unfortunately Nissan went down the front/rear independent suspension.

The older patrols of the 80 vintage were live axle front/rear. Tough running gear and great diesel (the 4.2). The 3L had some issues initially.

The 80 is larger inside, the patrol is not as tall, so less vertical room. The patrols were also farily prone to rusting due to sharp bends in some of the body - so take a close look.

cheers,
george.

Ok...you are talking about a 4 cyl with forced induction and an intercooler (Patrol) and an 80m series...well...you dont say it but I will go that they are both automatics...no contest, get the LC, but a better year should be possible...the steering is not as good in the Patrol, it will rev better, but pure strength LC is better...sorry, just read it well...an HZ, so you have a manual transmission therefore the ZD30 should be a manual as well...for DD go for the newer car, off road, LC hands down...the Patrol is best with their 4.2 or the short lived 2.8 (if you know what must be done to it)
Damn, Asussies have crazy prices! my 95 1HD-T auto with dual fuel tanks and dual AC (no fridge) will be sold for less than that...but is a LHD instead as your RHD

Geez we just bought a grandpa-spec NEVER BEEN OFFROAD 3F carb on LPG cruiser for 3K with 337klm on it. With the upfront saving over a diesel plus being LPG we'll be ahead for as long as we keep it. Gave it a $580 new spring and shock kit and put on some 'Dulux reco' wheels tyres we scrounged up plus an old bullbar and lights we already had. For what you see below we're into it for less than 4k = budget motoring.
Sounds overpriced at $8500 in comparison with those k's on it too.
ZD30's are known as hand grenades for a good reason. I'd steer clear.
Patrols are tougher but rougher around the edges (and to drive) but Toyota's last longer and the interiors dont fall apart. I'd hold out for a better 80.

To be fair, the OP may be a troll....

I’m constantly watching prices here in Aus and that has to be one of the most expensive 1HZ cruisers on the market.

I’ve seen 1HZ cruisers with less kms sell for under $4k...

Also, that patrol does seem to be pretty cheap compared to others, so not really a fair comparison.

The New Zealand and Australian cruiser and patrol markets really can't be compared with the US. Some generalisations that may or may not be helpful:

In NZ most Patrols/safaris (GU/GQ mostly) that come up for sale are either cheap (less than $8k NZD) because they're usually buggered. Bogans love them. The odd truck comes up that isn't totally buggered but people want north of 15K for them.

A diesel 80 for that price wouldn't last long in NZ (even if it was a 1HZ truck). At that price even if you had to put a new motor in it you'd still be laughing.

More importantly, you say you're buying your first car. The 80 you are looking at is OLD. They all are. realistically, so is the Nissan. Do you like working on cars? have you got space and tools to work on it? If something happened or you break something because you're sending it, can you afford to fix it? Are you dailiying it? What im saying is you're will need to be able to fix stuff, because these trucks are old and need love. If not buy a corolla and save up so you can fix stuff.

That said, buy the cruiser, they're cooler. Chicks dig cruisers, FACT.

Interesting how the Y61 Patrols look like the 80 series!

Agree with the rest that while the Patrols have their strengths, I still prefer a later model 80-series.
