The cost of HDJ81 oil filters in Canada is obscene, as are most Toyota Canada parts prices, so I decided to look into this issue.

What are the options?
The ToyoDYI site says the
· 01/1990 to 05/1991 HDJ81 takes the 90915-30002, which fits Japanese and US 1990-1997 FJ80, FZJ80, HDJ81, and HZJ81.
· 06/1991 to 12/1997 HDJ81 takes the 90915-03006, which fits Japanese and US 1990-1997 FJ80, ZJ80, HDJ81, and HZJ81.

So either filter will fit the gasoline/diesel 80 series, produced for the US and Japanese markets. It should be noted that the ToyoDIY data based is dated and often 'new part' numbers have replaced older numbers using the Toyota USA sites

What are the costs?
Toyota Canada = $48.22 (taxes) = $54.01 ($Can).
Toyota USA - $19.55 (plus. state tax) = $21.31 (plus 36% exch.) = $28.98 (if Can tax exempt) or $32.46 (w/Can tax).

Inter-Changeability
So if a FZJ oil filter fits the HD engine then if Toyota lists a 'new part number' it should fit the cross-listed Landcruiser model, because the filter it is was replacing was interchangeable.

The US Toyota database says a FZJ Landcruiser takes a 90915YZZD3 (D3) oil filter (the controversial 'small' filter), which replaces an earlier part number, which by that logic should fit any 80 series diesel.

D3 Fitment
The Toyota Canada database says the D3 has superseded many older part numbers and fits 'fits 723 Toyota vehicle variants and 615 models between 1969 and 2013'. So this oil filter is backward compatible with many model years and appears to have been introduced to replace a hodge-podge of older bulkier OEM oil filters.

As you see in this link, the D3 is used in a wide range of Toyota models - including 1998-2010 Lexus, 4Runners, FJ Cruisers, 1969-2007 Landcruisers, Toyota pick-ups, Sequoia, Tacoma and Tundra.

Cost Difference
The D3 is $6.06 ($Can) in Canada and $3.89 (USD) in the US.

Conclusion
You have options.

Ill take the Made In Japan filter over the Thai filter any day of the week, I get the shipped to my house if I am lazy or just run across the border.

Yan sells the Thai version for 30 something I think, or I can get the Made in Japan for roughly 25 Canadian out of the USA.... to each their own.

EDIT: The D3 doesn't look like its dual element, unless I am missing something? Also does not look like it has the check valve

That is why its nice to have options.
The D3 has a check valve - its going into Lexus so it will be a good design. What I like is since most engine wear occurs at cold start up, the small filter will comes up to pressure quicker than a big filter, thus reducing long term wear rates.

Funny enough my little 2LTE uses the same oil filter as the 1HDT/1HZ. I buy the Napa NGF 7254, which is actually a WIX 57254. Application: Yanmar and Toyota diesels. It's always in stock which is great. I sent my wife into NAPA one day to pick up the filter and she got a deal. With a nice smile, $35 down from $50+. Now I just bring the receipt in every time and get the $35 price. Front counter guys always ask me "how did you get that price?" I just shrug my shoulders.

Anyhow, I'm really happy with the quality. My oil actually stays transparent for about the first 2500kms after an oil change now, which is saying a lot for a dirty IDI diesel. This is probably also because I use high detergent oil and change fairly often, so I think my motor is very clean inside now anyhow.

Wowza they are that expensive? Ill keep buying the Toyota if they are that close in price.

Whats your high detergent oil? Im currently running Delo 15w40

I was paying $55 for the Toyota one locally, so $35 was a big improvement for me. I should look online I suppose. Although I do like being able to pickup these sorts of things locally and not have to store my own.

I meant high detergent oil compared to the conventional oils that were used in the truck before I bought it. I'm just running Shell Rotella T 15w40. But seems to clean very well though. I changed it every 4-5000km or initially, but now that the engine is cleaned out I may extend that.

If I could not get or did not have the dual element Toyota oil filter I would use the Napa/Wix. Have you split it open to see if it's a twin element?

I'm not sold that the D3 would be a good long term option. But I don't have facts to back that up.

The 3B oil filter crosses over to a host of gasser and diesel applications, so I'm not sure what my hang up is for the 1HD-T. If I don't have a Toyota filter on the 3B or 13BT I've been using a NAPA/Wix Baldwin B2.

Interesting info here about Toyota and other brand filters...it's worth reading the thread if you have not: Status on 90915-20004 filters

And there is this comment about Wix/Napa: Status on 90915-20004 filters That's from 2012 though and with rebranding, change of manufactures etc, who knows.

I think I've got a dirty one waiting to go to recycle. I'll cut it open when I get a few free minutes and let you know.

Cut the Wix open tonight. Here are the pictures.

OEM 90915-30002 Made in Japan filter cut open, seem to be a bit different than the 90915-30002-8T

So in a nutshell, both those Toyota ones look like they have better quality filter media than the Wix. But the Wix is not a bad second option I'd say. Especially if a person is in a rush and just needs an off the shelf filter to get the job done. I think the Wix flows more from the look of it...but at the cost of less filtering quality or filter life.

Uhhhh...what's with the flower petals on the work bench Christian, or did you cut those up in the kitchen?
Dunno, its not my work bench! hahah

Some of the information that was posted at the top regarding part numbers appears to be incorrect and was probably from doing a reverse search for part numbers and applications - when doing reverse searches, especially using ToyoDIY, you have to be very careful.

The 90915-03006 is actually superseded by the 90915-30002 Filter. For all intents and purposes they are the same part, but Toyota will sell you the 90915-30002 if you ask for the -03006 filter.

The shorter version of the filter is for certain applications that do not have the clearance to use the long filter (eg: Hilux pick up, certain car models)

The FZJ80 with the 1FZFE engine does not use the same filters as the 1PZ, 1HZ, 1HDT, 1HDFT, 1HDFTE, 2LT-II, 2LTE, 3L (some applications), 1KZ, 1KZTE and a few other engines that use the 90915-30002 Filter.

The 90915-30002 filter is your best choice, clearly, and I have read that it is actually rated at 10,000 Kms. In my own Cruisers, I had opted to go for 10,000+ Km oil changes when using synthetic oil.

After having to do tear down of my 12HT due to corrosion of the block and head surfaces which caused a head gasket failure (not much, if any, coolant was used while it lived in Japan) at just shy of 300,000 Kms, there was no appreciable wear on any of the internal parts. The one exception that it was sitting between the new and rebore point in the cylinders, so I went 1st oversize with new Alfin pistons. Moral of the story: Other than use coolant and replace it every two years with a healthy concentration with distilled water - is to use good oil and good filters, and if you have a sooty engine (most indirect injection engines are sooty) change your oil more often. Oil changes and good quality lubricants are key to keeping your engine alive in the longer term.

I have often explored supplying other brands of filters through RADD Cruisers, but have always chosen to stick with the original Japanese filters as the few dollars price differences are not worth it for an engine that costs from $10,000 to $20,000 to rebuild if things go wrong - which they do - but usually from detonation and over-fueling (bad injectors, incorrect timing, overheating the pistons from someone "tuning" the engine by die grinding the boost compensator pin) rather than lubrication issues.

I'm a couple decade veteran of the 510 club and the Napa Gold has been a longstanding favorite in that circle also, I can't comment in the flow vs filtering of a factory filter though.

Info like this is just one of great benefits of interacting with a community of like minded enthusiasts.

I couldn't get a Toyota oil filter from Burnz at Duncan Toyota a couple of months ago. He said they are
no longer available??
