This is our first Land Cruiser! Happily found it last week here in the SF Bay Area after searching for a very long time. Outside isn't too bad (hoped for white like my last three trucks; found green; hence, my wife's name for it), but the cloth interior and carpeting are excellent, which I held out for.

I plan not to build it like the mini trucks I currently have, but at least swap in a rear e-locker FZJ80 axle that I have had lying around for a while now, and maybe get sliders, bumpers, 33s (or maybe even 35s with an OME/Slee kit).

Cheers to Mud for all of the information and the welcoming members!

BTW: the Smitty Bilt Step Sides are up for sale in the Classifoed section.

OME 850J/863J - 4.88's - 37" BF A/T's ordered, waiting patiently!

Had this rig for a little while now, about 6 months, but finally got around to putting the OME springs on. Used their caster correction bushings, what a PITA to put in! Got the wheels from an FJ Cruiser, they're 17x7.5. Should have 37x12.5 BF A/T's in a few days, very excited about that. Lots of plans for this rig in the near future. Definitely getting sliders asap, then custom bumpers f/r, rear tire carrier and then roof rack. Going for the expedition type setup, will be pulling a tent trailer around the country whenever work will let me.

New Addict

Well I did it! Bit the bullet and bought a 1997 Landcruiser. The plan is to make an expedition rig out of it for my son and I to play in the northern woods of Maine.

First and foremost I want to thank all the individuals who posted such great information about the 80 series. I have been reading and following along for over a year now while searching and searching for just the right combination of attributes:

1) No Rust!! A very tall order for New England; body has none and undercarriage very little was undercoated; have since power washed and extremely pleased.
2) No receiver hitch; best chance of healthy tranny.
3) No roof rack; ( not critical but preferred)will be making custom one similar to post I've read; no rack-yeah
4) Low miles; under 120k; had 113k.
5) OBDII Compliant; will be using scan gauge-97with Ca OBDII sticker.
6) Single owner; soccer mom(from what the dealer told me a beauty!), Toyota maintained with records(no records but oil sticker and pink coolant and condtion my guess-yes), with exceptional Autock.
7) Oh! Of course Locking Differentials; probably never used; have yet to test will likely disassemble and lube up and re-seal; one of many projects to come.
8) No leaks; none so far.
8) Collectors Edition; not really, but I guess I'll take that too...

That which I did not want:

1) 2nd Cat hole rusted thru where dirt packed between shield and cat as well as the mid flange leaking; the only place on the undercarriage showing any real rust!? The rest of the exhaust looks remarkably good; wrapped and wire tied aluminum foil for drive home; a 500 mile trip; averaged 16-17mpg and drove flawlessly....other then a vibration when air conditioner was on and stuck in horrific traffic.
2) 3 minor dents; probably will be adding to that on our ventures!
3) Hood latch stuck open; dealer was going to tie hood down for trip; son and I fixed it while waiting for the paper work to be done; a little WD works magic.

All in all my son and I are very happy. He is twelve and as circumstances have dictated this will be our first in depth wrenching experience together.

Here are some pics, ( Hope I do this right)

I doubt that there is a whole lot I can add to this forum but as homage to all those who have given so much I plan to document and post our additions and alterations as well as become a Silver doodader as soon as I establish a paypal account....

Thanks to all and look forward to the 80's addiction!!!:bounce:

1. Year and model- 97 FJZ80
2. Name of owner: AJ
3. Name of rig: Ginger
4. Mileage: 120,000
5. Mods...if any: 40th Anniversary, factory lockers, new 32s and aluminum wheels, INTI roof rack...next rear bumper w/ tire holder
6. How the truck is used: job site truck, camping, commuting

This is my 2nd rig, got it 2 months ago. My first one was totaled when I got side swiped by a honda crv. Bent the B pillar, just enough damage to total it.

I wouldn't consider getting anything else other than another LC and it worked out in the end. I wound up with a lower mileage rig with factory lockers and enough left over to get the INTI rack :D.

Looking forward to learning a lot on the forum

Found it on craigslist a week after i bought the truck. The versatility of the rack is awesome, doesn't rattle at all, love being able to haul sheet good and 12' ladders. You can take it off or put it on in 5 min. Lately i've kept the side folded down and have it mounted backwards so i get a better view out of the sunroof and to clear the doors. The tent is actually a double Cabelas cot tent that couldn't fit better on the rack. I just took the legs and center bar off. Only $350 bucks!! much cheaper then all the other roof tents I've seen

97 LX450, milage 97000 miles, 94000 when I picked it up in the Dallas area this summer. No mods yet. But new polk speakers are ordered, new tires and wheels, shocks and springs to come. I'm thinking of 17x9 wheels and 295/70 tires.

This is my daily driver. My wife has an 06 LX470. Back home in Norway I have a 95 HDJ80 with the 1HD-FT and manuall tranny - missing it... This truck has to wait a couple of years before I move back to the cold country. Before I had a 94 HDJ 80 and a 99 HDJ100 - manual on both!
