Question #1
Is this true? I am looking for a rear 80 series(1994) Ring & Pinion in a 5.29 ratio(mine is factory locked) According to Justdifferentials(who I see on here occasionally), in their ebay ad, they claim that the ring and pinion for the rear of an 80 is the same as the front/rear of a 40/60 series(scroll down in their ad in the applications portion). What gets me is that if you go to randy's website, they only list an application for the FRONT of an 80(reverse rotation), but not an application for the rear... Yet if you search for a 40/60 series on their site, they list an application? any advice?

Their Ebay ad:

Question #2
I have searched on here, found a few old threads, but is there someone making a solid pinion spacer for an 80?, will the "V6" version work for this application from either Marlin or Trail-Gear?

Thanks
Jason

I just installed front and rear 4.88s from these guys and they setup real nice and have been very quiet during the break in period. JT also sells solid spacers and both the front and rear spacer had to be machined to obtain the correct preload. The front spacer needed .010" taken off while the rear needed .110" taken off.

So unless you have the equipment to do that I would definitely look else where for solid spacers. I believe Kurt at cruiser outfitters has them. Maybe someone else can confirm this for sure.

I was basically wondering if the rear 80 ring/pinions were the same as the front or rears of the FJ40/60's, so I could shop around, and if I found a vender that didnt list a r/p for the rear of an 80, I could ask them if they had a kit for a FJ40 or 60.

I will check with Cruiser Outfitters to see if they have the spacers..

Thanks a lot for your help

The factory 80 Series gearsets are different than the earlier vehicles.

The 80 open diff carrier (the part the ring gear bolts to) is the same as the very late FJ62. The case however is not the same number so it's not clear if gearsets will interchange.

Well, I had a very unusual situation with my gear set. Toyota updated the ring and pinion after the last production of the 80 series here in the US but the diffs I had were of the modified variety. With very little discussion they knew exactly what I had and told me what was needed to basically revert the diffs back to where they were pre update. I'd trust these guys to know what you have and what will fit as far as the gears go.

The gearsets will interchange. When it comes to aftermarket, the FJ40/55/60/62 F&R gearsets are identical to the FJ/FZJ80 rear ring and pinions. The OE stuff is slightly different, but its only a matter of setup ie the depth, shimming and crush-sleeve collapse are a bit different. We have set-up quite a few rear 80 Series R&P's into older 3rd members.

There are peripheral differences that need to be accounted for, 45mm vs 50mm carrier bearings, 10 vs 27 spline pinion flanges, threaded versus thru-bolt ring gear/carriers, etc however these have more to do with the install kits rather than the actual ring and pinions. :D

Listen to Kurt, he is the man. Igot all my stuff from him. Great customer service.

Now that there is damn good tech info. Click-save.

Thanks Kurt.

Yep, just gave my old rear 4.10 gearset to a buddy who broke the pinion on his 40. The ledges at the beginning of Rubicon got him. He does have an ARB, and the only thing I know for sure that he had to change was the pinion/driveshaft flange.

As for aftermarket gears, there really are only a couple of choices:
9.5" which fit the LC80 rear only as well as fj40 55 60 62.... front and rear.

The LC80 uses an 8" reverse cut front diff (hipinion)

Now, if you compare fj40 OEM gears to OEM 80 series gears, than you can find differences, like pinion spline, ring gear bolt style etc.

Great!, thats the info I was looking for...

I am running my stock 80 r&p in my 73 40 the pinion is the stronger fine spline. Also needed to get a new fine spline flange.

Anyone else verify? I have two 60 series pinion flanges I want to use to make a pinion flange for a 14 bolt, trying to avoid dropping my rear driveshaft, maybe I can measure with calipers tomorrow, I seem to recall the bolt holes being more rectangular than square but can't remember if they were the same.

It depends on the year of the 60. Early ones had the more rectangular hole pattern, later ones had the same 66x66 mm pattern as the 80.

Perfect thanks!

I'm going to try and build a pinion flange for a 14 bolt this evening, that bit of info will help, and change how it's built as will re-drill holes for the driveshaft at some point for it.
