I was really hoping for mid 60's in Silverton, looks like the forecast is showing 79, 80, 81 next week. :( Its better than what I've got but I was hoping for a chance to be "cold."

Anything but solid rain is a good forecast for Silverton. The nights will be plenty cool and there is a good chance you'll be cold on the passes :)

The forecast I see is a little different though...

@87warrior, I'm shooting to be in the Salina/Junction City area of KS on Monday night. Any benefits to booking a hotel in one town vs. the other?

Well, if you can make it to Salina before 9 on Monday I would suggest doing that. Just so you can stop here: The Cozy Inn
http://cozyburger.com/
That place has some amazing sliders and is just what you need after a long day on the road

@aging fleet - You will have more lodging options in Salina, but most of them are south of I70 along I35 by a few miles. In Junction City, I can recommend the Courtyard Marriott which is right off I70 and a nice place. Both towns have the highest concentration of lodging around Walmart...

And yeah, @KC100series is spot on about The Cozy Inn. Some of the best burgers in the state.

After a couple of thousand miles and a week of camping we finally made it to Colorado. Alternator didn't make it. Had to make an emergency stop in Laramie Luckily someone was able to get us right in and we were able to use the Wifi to get some work done.
Anyone have any suggestions for boondock camping near Silverton? Heading down on Sunday afternoon and want to stay somewhere for a few days before the weekend event. Original plan was to stay in Rocky Mt NP but want to escape the crowds .

Going West today.

650 miles behind us already and another 300 to Salina for the night.

Air temps are stupid hot today. It was 90 at 9:00 am, and 104F rolling through St Louis around noon. Coolant temps have been back & forth between 1, 98 &204, trans temps around 154, hotter than I care for but I'm pulling a trailer with my moto, rooftop box, and enough tools to open a repair shop.

Looking forward to cooler temps, and really dont mind the prospect of a little rain in Colorado- that should keep the dust down on the trails.

Stopping in Snowmass and Crested Butte before Silverton.

See ya'll next week.

Right there with you guys...I am supposed to get the truck finished today before leaving tomorrow...and at almost noon, the heat index is 104 with a heat advisory until 8PM......TOMORROW! Who does a heat advisory for overnight!? I am not coming back to Arkansas...Anybody want to hire my wife and I somewhere in Colorado...literally any job...and I am only mildly kidding.

If you have some time, do Skyline Dr in Canon City. INCREDIBLE views. about 3 miles in total length all paved.

I know at least one guy that won't be dealing with the scorching heat and pavement in the Midwest! Just received shipment here in Denver for HIH. @fireball

There are road side spots along the trails that spur off of the main road from Silverton to Animas Forks. I'm hoping to set up camp a couple of days before the event in this area, or at Ironton.

Not part of the desert club but pretty hot in Kansas! 107 degrees!

Desert club here, at least it's not the 123 degrees like it was a few weeks ago.... leaving Tuesday night. So a few more days

I'll add it to my list!

If you do happen to have more time in Canon City, you should also consider driving up Shelf Road to Cripple Creek (touristy mining town with casinos) then return by driving a mile or two over to Victor (smaller mining town with lots of old character) and take Phantom Canyon Road back down to Canon City. Shelf Road and Phanton Canyon are gravel and very, very scenic. The loop would be around 65 miles or so.

I assume you're going to Ouray via Monarch Pass, Gunnison then Montrose. If so, and if you've never seen it before, you NEED to see the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

Yep that is my route. I should have posted earlier, as you have all kinds of great suggestions! Skyline red may not work as we are towing a 13 ft travel trailer. Googling black canyon now.

First day 750 miles. Nor Cal straight to Havasu. Borrowing my parents trailer, heading to Zion in the morning. Beverly Hillbillies I tell you.

You may have been looking at Silverton, Oregon. Silverton, CO is tough to predict on weather. There is not a weather station in town, so they pull data from the closest ones. Silverton Weather is usually closer to Durango in terms of cloud cover and precipitation, but a few degrees cooler for temps.

Colorado (especially the high country) temps can be deceiving. 60 and sunny can seem very warm. Expect to put on and take off a lot of clothing while you're here. I'm usually in shorts and a hoody in the mornings, I'll lose the hoody by 10am and be back in it by 7pm. Nights can easily get into the high 30s. Don't be fooled by the daytime temps. I had frost on my RTT two days before HIH6 last year. If it rains at 6pm and then clears at 9pm, expect a chilly evening.
