Hi Guys

I im looking at buying a 79 Dual Cab with the 1VD-FTV engine and wanted to know if they are having any issues in terms of reliability?

I have the choice of going for the 1HZ or 1VD-FTV (V8) and leaning towards the latter due to performance benefits.

Thanks

There are more than a few here in Aus with over 500k kms. Overall, they are a pretty reliable engine if maintained. Sure, there are some injector problems in regards to dirty fuel, the starter motors a prick to change if your constantly in over the bonnet deep water, some report oil comsumption to the tune of 1L per 5000k if babied. All in all, if they are looked after with clean fuel and oil, they will last a long time. Think of it this way, if the 1hz was putting out as much power, it would be nowhere near as reliable. Now if the 1vd was putting out the same power as a 1hz, I'd say it would be hands down more reliable than a 1hz. As it sits, I'd say they are equally as reliable  Flame suit on.

I've owned 3 1hz in my time, and if I had the choice between it and a 1vd ftv, it would NOT be the 1hz.

Where do you stay? Is the V8 a standard import into your country? I have a V8 diesel and I love it. Absolutely no issues. I have also owned the 1Hz and if I have a choice it will be the V8 every time. If your fuel is an issue install a racor inline fuel filter to clean the diesel.

If he buys a brand new vdj they have a new style injector to solve the old problem

The new injectors are piezoelectric. This adds precision for injection control. On the v8 it's for more low down torque while meeting the upcoming euro 5 emissions. It still doesn't solve the problem of dirty and water logged diesel.

I was wondering what they did to them. All my 4wds have pre filters on them with water separators one of the best easiest mods you can do

All in all as good as the 1HZ is .. you can deny that V8 magic .. I would not hesitate having the chance to buy the 1VD-FTV

Thanks for the info thats much appreciated.

To see that they have done 500,000 km shows that the engines need to be good. Its also less stressed than the twin turbo setup in the 200 series which would probably be for longevity i would have assumed (unless space was an issue too)

Actually in Sri Lanka they only offer the 1HZ only for the 70 series but they bring down the 200 series with the V8 twin turbo. The vehicle that I am looking at is an import from brand new Australia. Fuel quality over here is not too great hence a fuel filter would be a must.

How would you know if its the new injectors or Old ones. The vehicle I plan to get would be from Australia.

What are the filters that you would recommend?

To know about the injectors what year model is the vehicle

I suspect the filters that are being recommended would be Racor style water separator filters.

I would love to own a VDJ7X. Aussies can't say enough about those rigs..
