Hey Guys

So like many of you out there, I have been dreaming of a 79 series dual cab much like the one our mate Ronny Dahl has on his youtube channel 4wheeling Australia.

I know Proffits have build a few single cab 79's, as has Slee off road. I know a few of you mudders out there have sourced and built up the odd mine truck.

But has anyone gone as far as to source and build a 79 dual cab?

Is it even possible with the DOT regulations. Yeah i know that sweet v8 diesel is a no no, but what about a collaboration of all the best parts (arguably) that were available here in the US?

Ive been day dreaming of importing a shell of a 79 dual cab, putting it on a 80 series chassis with a 100 series engine/ 1HDT engine, running a H55 or R151 trans. FULL Toyota spec

Would love to hear everyones thoughts

I predict this to be the next “thing” in the Land Cruiser world.

Would you pay someone to build this or build it yourself?

Cheers
It may well be the "next thing" in the Land Cruiser world but the expense alone may prevent it from being the "next big thing". I believe @c2dfj45 can shed some light on the cost of doing
such a project.

The simplest way to get something like a 79 doublecab in the US might be to ute-chop a JDM HZJ77. 1HZ's go well with a turbo added.

Cheers

Hello,

A few double cab 75 Series show up every once in a while in Japanese auctions. They may comply with the 25 year rule. Be warned that they are very rare.

Another option is chopping a 77.

A third option is looking for a South African 75 Series. Companies like Meano & Sons converted single cab utes into double cab ones. Again, there might be one or more examples that comply with the 25 year rule.

Guy in my neck of the woods wheels a 75 1HZ super short double cab, mining truck from Australia.....

H55 or R151 trans.

The h55f doesnt fit because of the panhard rods on the front coils. The R151 is no ones 1st or 2nd choice, maybe 3rd.
What you want is a H150, H151 , Im not sure about the H152 suitability without the V8 diesel.

Japan did not get a dual cab until the 30th. All the dual cabs In japan are just like the rest of the pre-07’ dual cabs, custom built. The cleanest chop I’ve seen [pictures of] was a 77, extended with a hiace bed dropped on.

In any case, the cheapest bet, to get a Ronnie dahl -ish truck would be to buy a hzj77, extend the frame, do a custom tray, and update the nose.

Caveat I have zero experience with this pure speculation.

They were still chopping and building dual cabs until the factory dual cab came out. The companies that made these in Australia may still have doors, roofs and sides left over.

Toyota will never sell a diesel in NA and now no longer in Europe - but why not GR79 with V6's?

You could import a '92 HZJ75 Meano, 3-link the front and use a V8 gas for cruising NA highways.

This is some great feedback guys.

Intersting, I wasn't aware the bodies had to comply with the 25 year rule, I thought it was just the engines.

So does anyone know what years they started making the single cabs, and then what year they started making the dual cabs 79 series? Being that some single cabs are making their way over to NA I'm assuming they have been around a lot longer?

Trying to determine when a 79 dual cab body (not the whole truck) would be eligible for import

Depends on the state. Many go off of the frame for year designation. Which means you could plop whatever you want on an 80 series chassis. As long as you can explain it to the DMV.

That said, and I know this is a Land Cruiser forum, but for all that trouble you'd be better off with the rumored upcoming V8 Raptor, diesel Ram 1500 or the ZR2 Bison Canyon. :D

EPA rule for engines is 21 years.

Single cab utes with narrow front clip started in mid to late 80s, don't know exact year.

I believe dual cabs began in 2012.

In the end, that would cost way more than a brand new GR79.

A much cheaper option would be to buy a HZJ75 Meano (79 shown), and convert the suspension with 80 series components like this toyota-landcruiser-extra-cab (if you don't mind RHD)

The unfortunate truth is unfortunately if you ever dream of owning a pristine lhd 79 crew cab you better buy a new one now and store it. The countries that these are in either have them bought new as a luxury truck to then slowly go to work truck (central and latin America) or Europe where if you see one it either belongs to a company using it for at least 10 years as a work truck or a private person converting it in an overlanding rig that will see use around the globe and after 25 years they are not pristine and still sell for more then what you pay for a new one in some countries.

South African companies will still build 4 door 75 series! I have a had several built.

Love it ! I was just dreaming of another project and came up with this. I have a 70 series I am just thinking about chopping then extending the frame and adding a toyota 6ft box on the back. The cab would likly be larger than in the pictures but no doors. I never need a second set of doors but having that cargo area is king !
This computer mock up is pretty poor but just the general outline of my thoughts. I strecthed the cab on my fj45 and it came out good but I'm getting restless and needing another project ! I love the look of the double cab in the photos with enclosed box !
