1978 Toyota FJ-40 Landcruiser. Excellent original condition with a few upgrades. California born and raised then moved to Reno,Nevada. The Odometer shows 35k miles but I’m guessing it’s 135k. It has spent the better part of the last 20 years sitting in garages.
The Good:
It’s all original except where noted.
Original mustard yellow paint.
A lot of mechanical work has been done the last four years and since then it has been garaged and driven only occasionally.
Rebuilt carb and complete tune-up. Most of the Cal emissions equipment operational, passed NV smog last year. Previous owner installed a Downey header and removed the carb heat system.
Rebuilt radiator.
Complete steering rebuild: New tie rod ends, drag link end, centering arm rebuilt, steering box rebuild, new ragg joint, new steering stabilizer, everything aligned to factory specs, including caster.
Knuckle rebuild. All seals replaced, new trunnion bearings, hubs rebuilt, new spindle bushings, front axle housing removed, sandblasted, and repainted.
Rear axle removed, sandblasted, repainted and axle seals replaced.
All new suspension. Old Man Emu 2 ½” lift springs and shocks, MAF ½” lift greaseable shackles, all new polyurethane bushings.
New clutch master and slave cylinders.
All new brakes. New rear wheel cylinders, new front calipers and pads, new extended brake lines.
New transfer case seals and rebuilt parking brake.
New seat belts front and rear.
Front seats rebuilt with new molded foam and new upholstery that looks like factory original.
New 31 x 10.50-15 BFG Mud Terrains.
Original canvas tool bag and some of the Toyota tools. Original work light that plugs into the glove box outlet.
The Bad:
Some body rust. The rear sill is rusted through in places. There are a few spots that have pinholes of rust and a little surface rust. For an old Landcruiser it’s not too bad. The floorboards are fine. It hasn’t been repainted so any rust is visible. The frame has some surface rust but no etching. I wire brushed, neutralized, encapsulated, and top coated parts of the frame (inside and out) when I had the axles removed. I haven’t finished the job—only the hard to reach parts have been done.
The previous owner had a low-speed tip over off a road into a ditch. It dented the rear quarter panel, the body near the right running board, and the door where the mirror attaches. The right front fender was replaced at that time and is the only non-original paint.
The headliner is missing.
The front and rear engine main seals leak. Not too bad but enough to need a drip pan in the garage.
