I am trying to get the carb cooling fan on my 77 Calif emissions 2F working. It works when jumpered and I have replaced the fuse under the dash. The wiring diagram for 77 shows a "water temp switch" in the circuit. All posts I have read talk about an exhaust switch under the manifold. I do not have this. Does anyone know where my switch is or where the wiring to this switch would be located in case the switch has been removed.

On my '76 it is located beteen the carb and the air cleaner - the mount is on the air rail itself, IIRC. It is a flat bracket with a round sensor at the end of it. That may be a terrible description.....I'll try to get a pic for you later if you can't decipher my "code talk".....

The switch should be located on a small bracket bolted to the outboard side of the exhaust manifold, just below and to the rear of the carb. If you look there, you will see a flat surface on the manifold with two bolt holes.

The wire for the switch was routed over from the DS fender similar to the brake warning wires.

Edit: Viewing Cruiserstuff's post reminded me. My '76 had the temp switch mounted on a bracket between the carb and the valve cover also. The '76 however, had the fan mounted in the DS front corner of the engine compartment. My '78 had the fan by the cowl louvres and the switch on the exhaust manifold as noted above.

I imagine that you should have the exhaust manifold switch if you have the cowl fan and that you should have the switch in the air injector area if you have the DS front corner fan.

I have the fan that is mounted in the front driver side corner. I should have said that the 2f has been desmoged and has headers, so there is no exhaust manifold switch. I know where that one is suppose to be because my 85 60 has one. The wiring diagram specifically says " water temp switch", so it has to be in the cooling jackets somewhere. Also the diagram shows a wire into the switch and a wire out, not the single wire to the heat sensor. I will look between the carb and the valve cover. Thanks.

Mine was on a 2"-3" L bracket to a bolt holding the carb insulator (near the brake booster hose fitting).

Thanks guys. With your help, I think I found my switch. I was looking for something in the block and this thing is just sticking up in the air behind the carb. Today I will jumper the switch and see if my fan runs. With the switch jumpered, it is my understanding that the fan will run every time I shut the engine down but the timer will shut it off after a few minutes. Is this correct?

I think you need to start the engine, jumper the switch, and then shut down the engine. I believe it should run for about 20 minutes.

By jumper, you mean ground. correct? just did this to my 62 series. just ran a ground wire from nut on switch to the body.

No , on this model it is actually a switch with a wire in and and a wire out, unlike the the 60, one wire, temp switch which makes a ground. Some other model 40's may also be wired like the 60.

Didn't know that, my 79 40 was wired the same as 60's.
