I am restoring a 73 fj40. The hard top, side doors and amby doors are from a 76. I have the amby doors figured out, with a new sill replacement and switching the license plate bracket from right to left so the spare tire door closes. The front doors fit fine, and the door
catch is fine. The problem is the door latch on the frame. Has anyone done a similar conversion or adapted a latch from the salvage yard. If anyone has any 73 doors around the Dallas area that they would like to trade for some 76's, that may be my best fix. My doors are in good shape (not rusted out, good, glass) I will even throw in 2 brand new handles from CCOT. But if it is an easy fix I will keep the ones i have.

Welcome.

Hit the F A Q there is information in there on this very topic!

Good luck!

I searched the FAQ's. I could not find any info on the strikers. I know that I need " late doors to early tub strikers" but where do i get them?

Mount the strikers for the later doors on your door jam, adjust them and you should be good to go.

If you need later door strikers, post up in the wanted section, I am certian that someone has them.

I purchased the door strikers for my 76 doors from CCOT.

#1. Holes are off by about 1/8th"
#2. Striker loop sticks out too far and hits the door.
#3. Striker plate is to wide it sticks out way past the door post.
Bottom line is the ones that they sent me are the right ones for the door,
but not the right ones for the door on my 73. The door post on the 73 must be different than the post on the 76.
I called CCOT, they told me to send them back and go to the salvage yard.

that will not solve anything, as you are only going to find the same thing in a yard that you have in your hand....

I've been running 79 doors on my 68 for twenty years. I used a 1/8 piece of steel and bolted to the holes in the tub, then with the piece sticking inside the tub I drilled two holes that matched the later striker. The vehicle is at my cabin, I will post a picture of how I did it early next week, going up tomorrow and coming back Monday. Even if you figure it out I want a picture anyway this is the third time in the last couple of months I seen this subject come up. If your not going for original the later doors are good upgrade.

That is just the kind of info that i need. It did not look like there was a bolt-on solution as I was hoping. I had also thought of modifying the late model striker by angle grinding the outside of the hoop off, and leaving a single post sticking out on the inside of the cab, because it seems to line up perfectly. If that makes sense. Paid $15 bucks each for them, so i would like to see your solution first.
Thanks, will be looking for the post

It will take you about five minutes to make them.

Those look really nice. Great IDEA!

What did you use for the striker (I think that is what it's called?) itself. Did you bend them with a jig and a torch or are they bought u bolts?

Any specs on dimensions?

Cool..I like making things. I am too cheap to buy. Thanks for posting.

I used A toyota striker you can see it in the backgruond of the pic. Grind down the spot weld an the back and so you can remove the stricker hoop. And use the old striker for a templet to drill your holes then weld them up. If you need more pics just ask.

ive done this before but that mod is nice and easier than installing the top post from a newer truck nice tip thanks
