I recently acquired a 1975 FJ40. Beginning to do some restoration; rust isn't too bad but I'm wondering if/how I should prevent rust underneath the truck. It looks as if a coating of some sort has been applied in the past but is peeling off now. Any suggestion or recommendations as to if/how I should go about preventing rust from underneath the FJ as the surface is going to only require minor fixes here and there I believe...?

Post us some pictures, and what are your plans/budget. Right way is media blast it and paint it, but right way is $$$$. I am using MasterSeries Silver, like por15 but can be applied over marginally prepared service, we will see. I used a top quality wire wheel on an angle grinder, and I brushed the heck our of the bottom. I also had some sort of 50 year old dealer undercoating I guess. Most of it was already gone, what was left most of that came off with the wire wheel and some elbow grease. If it would not come off I figured leave it as it was good. I then put two coats of the masterSeries silver, no metal cleaner, metal prep etc etc. That is suppose to be acceptable with this product. If it gets scratched this product is suppose to only allow rust in that scratch, it is suppose to prevent the rust from spreading like it would with normal paint. I then put a urethane black chases paint over top of that from the same company. In time we will see if this worked. It was relatively cheap, and it just brushed on with a disposable brush, I sprayed the chassis paint.

Thanks Chris; that's a huge help
I'll try to post pics soon; would probably help in the long run as far as sound advice goes

Just looked at that, looks good if it works half as well as shown....beats the heck out of Zero Rust....is that still around ??

I did my cj8 with Eastwood Rust encapsulator. Overall was happy with it. Jeep sits exposed to salt spray year round and son drives it on the beach all the time. After 4 years no sign of rust problems. Had some minor rust color show up in some of the seams where it must not have gotten covered very well. Sprayed them with the eastwood rust preventer. It is an oil/wax mixture and they now have it in black. That worked great. I sprayed that inside the frame. Will do the same with this fj40. Will drown the inside of the framerails with the wax/oil mixture. I would recommend it eastwood products. Went with the masterseries this time since suppose to be a superior product, especially with stopping rust from spreading if scratched, will not let the rust slowly creep under the paint. Both can be applied to rusty surfaces. I have heard so many stories of POR15 failing to stop rust. Reading the instructions for it are scary, 1 drop of sweat in the paint and you must throw it away, so much prep work etc. I am lazy and do not want that much work.

Eastwood it is. Thanks. Gotten more feedback on help on Ih8mud in 2 days than in months on other forums. Thanks for the help. I'm pumped about this FJ; will post pics soon. I'm a rookie to say the least and am looking forward to learning as I go.

I wonder if a insect sprayer would work to apply this through the holes in the chassis
