HA! At least now I know it wasn't me (this time).

Thank you, Sir!

Just an update:

While waiting for Jim to tickle the pretty carb, I tinkered with the old carb and did as Jim suggested and fully over-bent the Air Horn in the 12-ton press using shims, and Shazzam! She idles! :D And seems to run pretty good, too ....

Vacuum is low, though, at 14hg, so there may be a vac leak concomitant with the carb issues, or maybe time for a valve adjustment; Have not done one since I've owned it.

(sorry for lack of a green lawn, but we're in a bad drought, and I've stopped watering everything but the trees, tomato, and pepper plants)

Yeah, AFR meter with the tail-pipe probe seems to hunt like that. When I redo the exhaust, I'll put a bung in the down-pipe.

I like that you used the AFR to really check the tune. I asked my local wrench, and he replied that it was nice to have (AFR) but un-necessary. Sure, I thought - if youre a trained mechanic - which I am not. Curious to hear your results.

Sure, you can do it using RPMs and a Vac gauge, but for me, since gasoline has changed so much and these Aisan 2bbl carbs seem to be slow to mix adjustments, it's the only way to get it accurate. The AFR meters are kinda expensive, but worth it, I think.

Before I got my first cruiser, the last carb I had touched were dual side-draft SU on a mid-70s Triumph Spitfire. Man, talk about POS! No wonder I didn't touch a carb again for 20 years!

Here is your culprit: piece of AL swarf about .60mm wide, stuck in the end of the .55mm idle jet.

It would have blocked the entire orifice and thus you wouldn't be able to see through the jet.
