We used to do laps to Reno from Vegas. 75 mph the entire way. 72, 3speed, 4.11s. Ear plugs were required, but a well balanced motor made it easy. Brakes and steering were also.fully up.to spec..

Cadillacs are for freeways; cruisers are for places Cadillacs can't go.
I humbly take exception to that! Our new '84 FJ60 was referred to as "The Cadillac" when we showed up at our first Southern Nevada Land Cruiser meeting, as in "who's driving the Cadillac?" - and "Cadillac" became our CB handle. Over the years it's taken us anywhere any sane person would drive one, and, except for running taller 33's, it's all stock. Still runs well but has rust issues that need to be fixed.

maybe apples to oranges, but my 2Fd fj55 can do over 80...

When doing rpm calculations remember to actually measure the tire size. I know BFG 31" actually are 29.5" tall.

And that number varies considerably depending on tire pressure.

I suspect that part of the issue here is the noise. We have become accustomed to much quieter vehicles, so that when we get exposed to the noise inside the 40 (it's basically a metal box with limited insulation) we can't help but think that the thing is about to explode!

I for one have been driving mine for 5-6 years now, and only now am I starting to feel comfortable driving it at 60 mph. I get it up to 60, and everything is fine! It's loud as hell, it gets hotter inside, but the cruising is fine! Better insulation and an A/C, an 60-65 may be the norm for me...
