i have a 74 fj40 with orig 6 cyl it runs and drives good only prob is top speed is to slow for all the afterburners on highway it will keep up but i dont like running it that hard any suggestions would be appreciated 4-11 gears i think

Do like I do, and probably most on here, stay in the right lane and go slow....Since I used to be a sports car guy, I've found that because the FJ is so slow, it has eliminated my road rage tendencies....

It will do 70 all day long as long as it is running in reasonable tune.

Why do you feel you have to go fast? Peer pressure?
I know my Pig will do 80mph, but it doesn't like it, I don't care for it either. I drive 55. People go around me. If I can find a nice big truck doing 55 I'll settle into it's draft and stay there. Slow is good.

Leave earlier.......... hard to beat the sound of a finely tuned F/2F at 55mph......

My 74 can hit 70 at a bit over 3k rpm, with 31 inch rubber overdrive.

For safety reasons I don't go over 60 usually. Not worth the reduced handling and gas mileage to go faster.

With a warm 383 and 37" tires my 40 will zip past 80, but it is much more relaxing and easier on fuel to run in the 55-60 crowd.

I pushed my '73 past 70 going through Denver long ago and it was anything but fun, loose steering and ruts in the road made for a terrible experience.

If you are looking for better road RPM's you can drop your gearing but then the I-6 may start to feel a little sluggish. Rubber overdrive, maybe 3.73 diff's than maybe a 5 speed or auto w/OD.

In my 70 with a 350, 35's and the 5:29's in her, I can sprint at 70mph. That's at 3500rpm. I cruise at 60 and always get there. Just never be in a hurry. I'm a better crawler :steer:

yep purrs liike a kitty at 55 or so dont want to stress it any more than that just thinkin

mine is lock stock purrs at 55 just wanted to see what the word was about more speed im fine where i sit just love the looks i get on the one laners with a line behind, but they will get over it thanks GE

brett
to change gears to 373 a big deal or no and what about availability of getting them

Keep the 4:11's They are better!
I cruise at 55-60 and don't care who gives what kind of look. They can , as my daughter says, "build a bridge and get over it!"

I have 4.11's + 31" tires and choose to cruise at 55mph/2790rpm.

62mph/~3100rpm is easily possible, but I don't like to cruise that high (but I'm diesel, maybe a gasser would be fine at the higher rpms, dunno).

Here by San Fran 55 is just fine in the right lane. In Chicago I'd be a speedbump in someone's rearview mirror...

Most of the FJ 60's have em and just swap out the whole pumpkin. no big deal:)

Thats what pull outs are for. If I see three or more cars behind me I use a pullout.

I have a 73 with the stock 3 speed and 50mph sounds like it is screaming. Believe it still has the 4.11, but without a tach not sure how fast she is turning. I have P265/75R15's on her now. Any ideas?

3rd gear/top gear. is 1-1. i'll ball park it at around 3K rpm. you still have 1500ish till red line.
