I recently bought new locks for my 72 FJ40 - for the driver's side and rear lift gate.
I tried removing the driver's side interior door latching mechanism but found that wasn't the way to install a new door lock.
Do I need to totally take apart the door panel in order to install a new lock? And like ways on the rear lift gate?

I would welcome your advice.
Thanks

My 72 came with 76 top and doors which are different but doing locks isn't all that hard - just really tight working space. Read and watch some vids.

Rear door lock comes out after pulling the spring metal piece holding the lock in. I believe the drivers side door lock comes out the same way, after removing the spring clip.

Yes the spring clip secures the lock itself to the door.
But to get to the spring clip while installing the lock there is no room to reach the clip within the door panels - the access holes are not large enough to use fingers or needle nose pliers.

Well someone put them in. Carbide jaw needle driver have a much better bite than regular hemostats. A wide flat blade screw driver inserted in the bow and then twist to lever out the clip.

I read the info at Early FJ40 door lock cylinder removal? - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/early-fj40-door-lock-cylinder-removal.738968/ and found the posting by FJmoneypit very informative but on the drivers side when I removed the latching mechanism and the access panel I found that I could not reach the lock itself. There appeared to be an internal "panel" between the access panel and the hole for the lock. I couldn't get my fingers to go from one hole to the other.
