I have a '71 40 (one piece steering shaft) that I needed to replace the steering box on. I made the box swap and found that the end of the shaft where the steering wheel attaches is larger than the one I pulled off. Were there two different types of wheels that fit on these early steering box/shafts?

yes, can’t remember exactly when but right in the 71ish models it went from the larger (36spline?) to the smaller 33 spline. Cheapest/Easiest would be to trade in your 71 wheel for an earlier version.

Change date was 7/69 and went from.36 spline to 33 spline. Advantage of the 33 spline is Toyota used it on many models and until the 95 model FZJ80 with a airbag on all Land Cruisers. Even after 94 used 33 spline just all US steering wheels are made for a airbag.

I’m currently using an FJ60 wheel as a placeholder for my 12/71.

I am some what of a steering wheel junky. I first bought a gray 60 series steering wheel. Which is funny because at the time think the only 40 series I owned was my 68 FJ40 with 36 spline. I bought a 94 FZJ80 leather steering wheel to use on my FJ45 that planned to update to a later (73+) steering box. Then located a 8/80+ 40 series steering wheel. Then someone on mud was selling a gray FJ62 steering wheel cheap. Today I'm not sure how many steering wheels I have. I know I do span from a 1961 FJ40 to a 94 FZJ80. Only style I do not have is the early FJ55 steering wheel. If I ever found one of those would probably buy it as I have a number of early steering boxes it would fit so covered 36 or 33 spline.

Thanks guys. Off I go to the Classifieds to post a wanted ad for a 36 spline wheel.
