First off I have been a searching and reading fool on this topic and couldn't find the actual answers/comparions.

Getting ready to drop a 5.7 into my FJ62 and looking at the difference between the Downey and the AA adapters kits. It looks like the AA kit you need to replace the 700R4 output shaft, and on the Downey you replace the Transfer-case input shaft. The 2wd 700R4 I have has a fresh rebuild so I would rather not open it up, and my transfer could be gone though so? It seems a while back when looking into this, someone had talked about needing to chop off a the tail of the tranny output shaft- then you bolt on the adapter- does this sound familiar? Any pros or cons on either kit, or a different suggestion?

Also, anyone ever retain the stock 62 shifter instead of going aftermarket?

Thanks everyone

In my experience the adapters from AA and Downey are just about interchangeable. On both you MUST cut a small section off of a 2wd outputshaft to make the kit work. However, you DO NOT have to disassemble the trans to do this , you just pull the tail section off the trans (this has to be removed for the adapter anyway). Both kits come with a new stub shaft (Transfer input shaft) that slides over the 700r4 (4L60E) output. Both kits will require you to fully disassemble the t-case, so you might as well rebuild it while its apart (new bearings seals and gaskets). I have not used a 62 shifter, but think it would be cool if you could make it work even though it is kinda spindly looking.

Thanks for the info, it cleared some stuff up for me, but how the adds are worded it sounds like AA includes a new 700R4 output? Guess I'll just have to call?

I just thought it might be cool to keep the shifter, all the aftermarket ones will make it look like a hot-rod?

Thanks agian! Anyone elses .02

I just took the plunge and did a complete gear box swap for a couple of reasons. First, I wasn't thrilled with the Mark's bellhousing adapter although with the new upgrades, they are probably better. Second, parts availablity for H55Fs is probably not all that bad, but it certainly isn't great. And then there's the ratios; the NV4500 I put in has a lower first gear and 10% more overdrive and it's bomb proof, that's reason number three. Fourth, the transfer case has rather weak ratios and the whole off-set output only robs power, so I put in an NP241. For the record I'm 2 to 3 MPG better with these gearboxes and I LOVE the 70:1 crawl ratio I now have. Obviously I had to swap the rear axle too, so I found a GM 14-bolt semi floater out of a 2-wheel drive truck. They are 64" from flange to flange and are already six-lug with 33-spline shafts. Disk brakes replaced the drum junk. I can't believe I waited so long to do this! The NV4500 (Chevy version with a 5.6:1 first gear ratio) absolutely rocks! Smooth, easy to shift, perfect ratios for the 350 and the whole assembly is dead quiet. The t-case is super simple (my daughter could rebuild this) and proven reliable as a hammer. I fabed a bracket to retain the stock shift lever. Hey, if your going to get wet, you might as well go swimming!

So I made some calls this morning more or less the Downey and AA kits are the same. The thing that sold me was the customer service I recieved at Downey-it was phenominal! WAAAAAY more than the... this is the part # you need, ready to order? Always makes you feel much better about dropping that much coin. Plus Downey carries all of the other little odds and ends if you need. Anyway, hope this may help someone someday

I was going to do the same 5.7L/700r4 swap on an fj60 and was told here in this forum that it could be done. I did order a Lokar rod kit. I'll dig it up and get you a part number. I ended up going with the 5-speed & Vortec instead...
