Hi all, I have not seen a lot about the latest 70 series V8s, my own is now 4 years old and is now the "old " model the latest shape getting the addition of airbags and a new dash.

I'm aware that only NZ and Australia have the V8 diesels but would welcome any feedback / discussion on the 2007 and younger models regardless of engine options.

My own truck had a oil use issue between 30,000ks and 37500ks where it consumed 3 litres of oil. I know that will spark some debate but the owners manual states that the engines can use up to a litre per 1000ks and that this is normal and not excessive. A mate with a slightly younger truck which has now doubled my mileage had the same issue but it has now done 60,000ks with out a repeat issue. My truck with less ks has also been trouble free since the 37500k service. Appears to be something they do while "running in" There are now a number of them on the road here, and to date I have no other accurate information from owners and drivers.

I have done several long trips, day trips between 400 & 600ks and 5 /6 day trips around 1500k, these being a mixture of sealed roads and 4WD tracks, with most of the trucks use being 2 night weekend trips, and being used around home carting anything and everything.

I have been very impressed with the trucks long haul abilities, and how comfortable it is on these longer trips, and the ease it hauls the various loads I have had on it the heaviest being about 1500kg. It handles weight extremely well off road as well. My job brings me into contact with a wide range of 4WD Utes and the Cruiser is the pick of the bunch. I'm not saying that because I own one, only because it is. Having said that it is also the most expensive. But to counter that it has also held its value far better than anything else the same age. So heres a few Pics, please add to the thread but would appreciate owner / driver comments rather than " My mate heard ... etc.

I had a chat to a mate that has two vdjs for work one old dash 07 and one of the first with the new dash , they tow cherry pickers and wood chippers all day ( tree lopers) the 07 burnt oil until around 40k and has stopped now and the newer one hasn't burnt oil from new . Weird. Maybe different oils .

I remember in 2000 when the gm ls1 motors were introduced to our gmh range and they were mega oil burners until the problem what ever it was was fixed a year or 2 later.
My ls1 burnt oil untill I changed the oil thickness .
I guess they don't make them like they used to

i hate the fact that you have to go to a dealership to basically service any new engine.
nothing is built tough like the old stuff.

Not sure that we have to have it serviced by an agent - I have a 5 year warranty with the truck which gave me the confidence to buy a new model in the first place. That plus the reputation the 70 series has in several markets, Toyota could not let that slip, and to date they have not.

Although new its still the same for servicing, grease, change oil, filters, etc. I am no mechanic hence the desire for a new truck, a lot, less to go wrong - for a few years anyway. For many of you on MUD it is not a problem.

Cheers

nice pics a real working truck

Thanks for that it was set up to fulfill multiple rolls, shopping trolley, rubbish / firewood transport, tourer, trail hack, long distance Cruiser, campin wagon, tow wagon.. and anything else you can put on the back or lift on to the towbar. My wife has a car but we tend to use this more than the car - its so versatile and does everthing I ask of it so very well.

love the first pic!!

We are about 3000ft above seal level here, place called Mt Patriach. Its about an hour from home. Real handy 4WD territory. This was winter 2010, we had several good snow falls, so we just had to have a play. This was real powder snow, very soft. I was amazed at how far we managed to push our way through the stuff. The secret was not to stop. If you came to a halt and sat for a while ( like I did here ) it was difficult to back out. If you drove into it to the point the wheels were spinning, if you backed out straight away it was all good. You could them bulldoze another 2 or 3 truck lengths then back out again. We did this for several kilometers. We only gave up as it was a getting a little late in the day, and we were not to keen to stay till after dark.

You would see a few snowfalls in your neck of the woods I guess??

Cheers Crusher

Sound to me that the 1VD is a vulnerable engine. So is it with issue of the oil or engine itself? 40k burning oil! What causes to stop now?:hmm: Any more of burning oil issue with the recent new 1VD? Did Toyota rectify the issue?

weeeeell, they did let it slip with the LJ and KZ light duty 70 series models
and since the V8 is 2 "c" blocks simesed together and those had head cracking issues i am still hesitant.
but
a bit of oil useage does not make a poor engine.

Your knowledge is far greater than mine - so yep they did let it slip. "C" Blocks??. I have heard the V8 is actually two diesel corolla motors as you nicely put it "simesed" together. Are these the C blocks??

oil usage - the handbook says in certain conditions upto 1 litre in 1000klms is not excessive. These things leave no audible smoke trail at all, under any conditions so the oil is "used" rather than being spat out the back. Mr Toyota comments that although a D4D engine they are far more advanced than any other D4D in the same family. No matter to me anyway I just love it, I really enjoy driving it.

yah, the corolla diesel was the "C" block
note i said "a bit of oil useage does NOT make a poor engine." in other words, i have seen engines that use oil that are extremely reliable and run for a long long time.

Agree entirely - cheers
