Hi there,

I recently acquired an old Toyota Land Cruiser short base (70 series) with a 2.5L 1JZ twin turbo installed on board. We are currently preparing it for the conditions of the rain forest of Borneo. I'm member of a 4x4 club there named SAKTA. This is a group of passionate people with a huge experience in the extreme conditions of the jungle of Borneo.

Originally this car was used for street racing an drifting and had never seen muddy conditions in its life. This mistake is corrected! You can have a look at the transformation at Picasa Web Albums - olive_fr I have posted there many pics of the different phases of the modifications, which are still going on! :wrench:

Here are few pics:

The Toy before the transformation... a 20 years old 70 series.

The 2.5L 1JZ-GTE fitting in the hood. Enough power to tackle the muddy conditions of the Rain forest.

After 2 weeks of work. 4" suspension lift by Old Man Emu, 35" Extreme Trekker tyres. Almost ready to go!

Exhaust line placed on the side, will be protected by the tubular side steps.

A PTO winch has been installed. Absolutely necessary to pull you out of a mud pit.

And more to come in 2 weeks. Going out this Monday and after that 2 weeks of more preparation to finish the body rust, install a front and rear bumper, side protection as well as an external roll cage. Then there will still be some other improvements the latest being the installation of 2 ARB lockers for the front and rear axle.

Don't hesitate to ask questions if you have. If you plan to visit Borneo one of this days and specially Kuching, drop me a message! :steer:

Hi Orouit,
Nice truck.
l was in Kuching and Singapore 2 years ago visiting my family.l was from Limbang.next time l go to Malaysia,or Kuching, can l pay you a visit?

Saw your preparation when I registered to the forum. Winch is cool but I have to learn how to use it. I'm quite a beginner but I have the best professors of Asia!

By the way I'm French and I love Spain. Been there many times during my rock-climbing period. Hablo un poquito Espanol! You live in a very nice place. How is off-road tolerated in Spain? Before being in Malaysia I was of course in France and competing in the regional (south east) and French enduro championship but it was very difficult to ride because everywhere is forbidden for motorsports.

Here in Borneo it's total freedom, you can go anywhere you want and modify the cars as you wish! Try to drive this car in France!

Cheers

Hi Lulo,
do you think the PTO is better than electric?
What do you do to keep the shear pin from breaking, bigger pin??
l have broken many pins pulling my HJ61 out of snow.
Simon

yea x2 thats what i was thinking but forgot to ask

Don't have any pics of the previous owner who was drifting with it. Right now the tires are quite calming the engine on tarmac (this is relative, only under 4000rpm) and regarding the lift (4") this not really a drifting machine!

However we have large beaches near Kuching where we can go for drifting, but I'll use another set of tyres, this one has too much grip on the hard sand! And I'll wait to have the roll cage... in case!

Cheers

Regarding the PTO, I'm not yet an expert (far from it), but my friends of the SAKTA definitely are! We don't have snow here, but if you look at some pics on my Picasa you can see that we have among the toughest Mud conditions. That's why they use PTO, because when stuck in the mud pits here you can need more than 10 tons of pulling force. Look one of my gallery, the one with a blue Dayatsy jeep, we had to pull a heavy long based using 2 PTO, one pulley and the 2 cars were attached to trees. Electric winch would be burn in such condition. We use electric winches on lighter vehicles like the Suzuki jeep.

The Pin issue is the known problem, mine will have to be reinforced as well.

There will be an electric winch at the back of my truck. All my friends who compete use PTO and have a mechanism to sue it in front and back.

Cheers
Olivier

i wonder why you are using a 1JZ which requiers high revvs etc since this is not a VVTI its almost impossible to drive under 2000rpm and tears the jungle up leaving only a ploughed pair of tracks.

Surely a 3.0 diesel would be more suited.

Most PTOs here are welded up to stop the shearing.

Well I got the opportunity to get this truck for less than 4000euros. The swap was already done. In fact the engine gives already a lot of power between 1500 to 3000rpm. When used with low gear ratio it just reacts like an electric motor. I rarely use it above 4000rpm, but when you need power to extract you from any situation... just press the pedal and you get everything you need!

I've been racing enduro (motorbike) for few years and if could compare this vehicle with a bike its a very easy 250cc two stroke bike! In fact the weight/power ratio of this car is comparable to the one of my enduro bike.

Once everything will be installed on the car, including workmanship, I will go to a bill around 10000euros for a car I intend to use both for touring and average competitions here in Malaysia and south east Asia. Quite a pretty good deal.

Regarding the engine many of my friends are using either 1JZ-GTE or 2JZ (turbo or not) and for the type of terrain we have it has proved to be a good base. Of course some are using diesel engine, often 4.2L boosted with a turbo. A 3L diesel is a very good engine for european conditions or african raids. During our Jamboree we always need heavy duty recovery car to either winch or pull, specially from severe mud pit.

To recover this car we used, 2 PTO, one connected via a pulley to double the pulling power.

The blue one is powered by a 2JZ, the black one by a 1JZ-GTE

But well sometimes, even power is not enough!

If you have the opportunity to come to Sarawak (Borneo), come to see us! We'll go for a drive :steer::steer::steer:

Hi Olivier,

SAKTA of Borneo!

Hi Simon,

I'm a member of the SAKTA club in Kuching. :steer:
SAKTA is Sarawak Adventure and Travel 4x4 club. This is a group of really hardcore 4WDrivers! Many of them already entered the RFC few times and other competitions like the Borneo Safari in Sabah. This year edition of the RFC in Johor there will be 6 cars from the SAKTA. I will certainly go for it next year. I need some practice, I'm still a beginner even if I have 6 years of enduro racing background in France.
Check this: Sarawak 4x4 Travel Adventure Club/

My wife is from Kchg and I'm currently working in Singapore. So most week-ends I'm back to Kchg. The car is not completely finished yet, as I said should be fully operational end of next week.

Wow im impressed congratulations you must be the first 1JZ-GTE owner with twin turbos I have heard of who drives under 4000rpm. Most of the ones in COMP cannot run under 2000 rpm and stall everytime they winch. Usually its 6000+RPM dump the clutch and let the "god pto winch" and the rice padi ploughing wheels get them out of trouble. Only a 2JZ VVTI is any good for low rev driving and winching 7M is the same low revs or MAX revs nothing in between. They buy these engines to rev them not to be quiet with them.

Can''t wait to see it in the RFC and see how it goes.

Most SABAH guys use hotted up 15B-T's which is 4.1litre and the god winch's.

I would have thought a 1JZ-GTE on a SWB LCII is too light to be a recovery vehicle. What do you do connect to another vehicle to recover with ot use trees too hook the rear onto to recover?

Even my loaded up TROOPY needs to be held down to recover really stuck vehicles.

Cicak,

I see ur point. I may have not used it enough to e in situations where I really need to push it. Although I already had to pull another LCII under heavy rain in a freshly bulldozed muddy track and still I didn't have to push the engine above 4000rpm while recovering this car.

My background is Enduro, where I used a KTM 200EXC (2 strokes). Even this engine can rev quite high (6 to 7000rpm) it delivers enough torque and power at medium rev and that's mostly the way I used it.

As I said the 1JZ reminds me more a 250cc with most of the time enough torque and power under 4000rpm. Of course it's pleasant to rev it above, but one as to be able to handle the power when it comes... and a LCII is not a 100Kg KTM!

I try to apply my style of riding to the 1JZ. I don't know the exact power curve of this engine but from what I could experience there is already a lot of power up to 4000rpm. I consider the 4000 to 7000rpm range as a reserve when needed. Time will tell if I'm right or wrong. Hopefully I can participate to the 2010 RFC in Touring and some other comps in Sarawak or Sabah before that.

hi, i'm also from kuching n an offroad ethusiasts.good to see u in this site.i think the car u bought it from borneo 4x4,is it right? i owned a LWB l/c II with only minor mod as the cost for modification is quite high. i do a lot of offroad driving due to my nature of job, as an enforcement officer at the s'wak authority to curb illegal logging n monitoring timber industry throughout s'wak. And i also knew many of s'wak sawmill "tauke" are also hardcore 4x4 ethusiasts. but nice to see people like u with lots of $$$ getting involved in this activity.i wish i have the $$$ to equipped my l/c just like yours

i think the persons in few of the pictures are voon, eddie n david.is it right??

Did they ever use this engine in the Diahatsu Feroza?
I imagine it would go well in the sand dunes;)

Some really neat looking rigs in those pics:cool:
