I have one of those South African built trucks ( or bakkies as we call them here ) and as I have mentioned they are built on the 79 chassis and there is no chassis alteration. Build quality not as good as original and changes to petrol tank breather system causes all sorts of problems. I don't know about the diesels in that respect, but mine is 6 years old and I would think that the tank problems is ironed out hopefully. Funny how you guys want the double cab and we want the turbodiesel! Problems with cracking door pillars and roof attachment has been mentioned, but mine still original and fine

Well if you have one that's perfect. I would be extremely grateful if you would care to take some photos that shows how it's made, so that if quality is not really good, then I could get someone here to build it for me.. Or maybe have a go myself.
I am not sure what doors and seats are used, Prado lj78? It sounds really good with storage space under bench seat, maybe suitable for rifles and fishing rods.
About the turbo, why not just fit after.market turbo kit? That is very common here.

nah, i don't have an issue with the smaller diffs, remember ALL Land Cruisers from 1990 on had the small front diff.
smaller diff =
more selection of gearing available
same selection of traction aids
better ground clearence

i minced the smaller diff in my 79 but never had dramas with the 75's with big front diff just heaps of cv's ,
do the big diffs have weaker CV's than the smaller diffs and the smaller diffs have weaker gears than the bigger diffs

I have made contact with the guy here in NZ who built that truck....
And getting build photo's soon.
So watch this space....
The only bits he didn't capture where how he married in the HZJ cab floor in the rear with the 75 series back and the 75 series doors.
He did say it took him a wee while to fit it up. He retained the HZJ floor pan and rear seat mounts.
As under this floor pan are the attachments for the fuel tank...Still all factory.

It makes so much more sense to start with a 77/ 78. I always imagined (wrongly) that this rig started life as a pickup. If you are going to be happy with a tray on top of coil springs all you really need to do is find a stuffed mine truck cab. You only need the back of the cab, fuel tank and doors. I'd just love to be building that cab in the garage this winter. It sound's like a lot of fun.
I wonder if anybody still has any of those HZJ75 cab backs that Ens gave away in the 90s.

i want a 79 series cab back but ens only cuts off the top half ... i guess i could fab up the bottom. i still like the look of the 4 full doors ... and i do have a donor frame to extend this one ...

the best donor would be a 77 that got rear ended ...
those ones that were recently wrote off have too much damage to be used. might be good for a 4 door convertible though ... out of my price range anyway.
