I am going to be installing a 70 series semi-floating rear axle (to gain the parking brake mechanism) under my 66FJ45LV. I would like to have a spare set of rear axle shafts and I wanted to know if they were both different from the 40 SF flavor shafts.

Kurt's info is not complete:

Thanks,

This seems to answer my question... can anyone confirm?

"I took everything apart today to compare. The early 40 series long and short axles are the identical length to the 70 series! The differance between the 2 housings is that the 70 is about 1 inch wider. Now this is where it gets weird...if you put the 40 series axle with the shafts installed next to the 70 series axle with the shafts installed the hub to hub measurement is only about 1/4 inch longer with the 70 series! The differance is where the 70 series backplate is mounted deeper over the axle housing. "

The P/N are different, as I have found at least with the FF axles, the hubs sometimes differ slightly by truck/year. So the shafts are the same length, but the hub face will move around a little:meh:

My understanding is that the semi float axles are a direct match.

The Full float axles from 8/80-1/90 on the short (right side) are ALL identical for FJ40, BJ42, BJ70, HJ60, FJ60, FJ62 etc. The long side axles for 40 and 70 series are the same= with 70 series rear axle shafts working up into the year 2000's.

The early 40 series Full float with 3 lock rings (made 1975-1980) are unique.
