70' FJ40 wont start

Hey all,

Ive had my fj for a few months, and have been running it with the choke about 1/2" pulled for the while ive been driving it. The last time I drove it, I had to run with the choke out further than usual or it would stall. Today it will not start.

Cranks over fine with ample battery power, and I can smell fuel after cranking a few times. Electronic ignition, new plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor. Fuel pump also looks new (engine swap to a 1972 F motor was done in 2006).

It seems like I am getting fuel and spark, but no air. I was already aware that running with the choke out is a symptom of a vacuum leak, but could it have gotten so bad that the motor will not even start? I have a replacement gasket for the manifolds, but dont want to dive into that if its unnecessary. Carb problem?

Sounds like bad points. Just a guess though.

Scratch that; I see you have electric.

having to use the choke after warm up is indictive that it is running lean, thus limiting air to provide the correct air/fuel ratio.

Start with the basics....compression, correct air/fuel mixture and a properly timed spark.

pull a couple of spark plugs and see if they are wet with fuel

I just pulled the air cleaner off to check the carb and noticed the flap in the carb was stuck so pulling the choke wasnt closing it...adjusted the cable, pulled the choke, and she started right up. Thanks for the help!
