Has anyone done this? Is it a bad idea? Too Heavy?

I ask because I have a 97 80 all maintenance done baby, except HG with is coming soon and worries me.

I also own a pristine 2k f350 4wd 7.3 that has been tended to as well. Just wondering if I could blend the 2. I would be ok with the 350 being the donor, even though it is a crewcab 4x4. I am not getting rid of my 80. I am the original owner.

Just curious on thoughts.

My question is why? The Cummins is the go to unit if you are going to spend time and money on such a swap. FYI the cummins is heavier than a 7.3 and the 5.9 lives under the hood of quitea few 80's. Why does the 1FZ HG worry you? It's a lot less time and money than a diesel swap.

The WHY is because he already owns the 7.3. As for the HG on the 80, I would guesstimate thaw nearly half of them done on MUD are done as a preventative, not a repair .

I think you could make it fit, but what transmission and transfer case are you going to use? The stock trans won't be reliable anymore. If you use a Ford transmission and transfer case you need to move / modify the gas tank and get new drivelines. Possibly even swap in a centered rear diff axle...

Seems like a slippery slope. I'd not use a Powerstroke simply because of the racket they make.

Nothing sounds better than a 6.0 or 7.3 powerstroke, IMHO. I have had powerstroks for a long time and the 7.3 is a winner. The downfall is the transmission that went behind the 7.3 if automatic, unless you went with a manual, ZF6.

It would probably be simpler than a cummins swap as the cummins is such a tall motor. The 7.3 is just wide, but I would rather a wide than tall motor.

Do it.

Spoken by someone who has never had the pleasure of hearing a 1HD-T with a 3" exhaust!!!!

This would be an epic combination, the 7.3 is a B34st!!!

I've thought the same ever since I got my 80, just never had the know how or finances to pull it off.

IDK if the 80 running gear can hold up to the torque a mildly built 7.3 would push. My buddy is running about 700 ft/lb

I have actually considered trying to sell the isuzu engine I have been rebuilding for the swap and going with a 7.3 since they are pretty abundant around here..half a dozen on CL under $1500. Then again the list of parts used off of the original 4bd2 is substantially shorter than the list of new parts I had to buy....including a NOS 4BD2 block. I don't know that I could get $3500 out of it which is slightly less than what I have into it. But I would really like to see more options than the 2 or 3 people seem to go with. I applaud you for thinking outside the box. Last time I did that jonesy's berated me a bit and more or less called me a Jerry's kid. I say go for it! The more open minded builders we have succeed, the more options we have.

Are there adaptors for zf5 zf6 or 4r100 trans to yota tcase or yes you might have an issue with gas tank and driveline. Lots of one off custom things, if it'll even fit.

One of the guys I served with had an 03 f350 he had a bully dog programmer and several more mods done to it, on a mild tune in the sand on 37" tires he snapped the pinion on his rear axle sheared it clean in two. It was comical.

A good point was made that the HG fit is a lot less PIA and $$$$ than a diesel swap, all else being equal. However, if you're just itching for a diesel and understand what's involved and the cost, I'm with you. I don't think I would use the Powerstroke just because it's laying around, sell it and fund a better option. You really don't want to be a pioneer when it comes to a diesel swap. Take the well beaten path of the Cummins 6BT. The 4BT is a good option, but don't do it until you ride in a LC with one. I've noticed a lot of 4BT swaps are sold within a year of a conversion because of the vibration and noise. Another good option is the Isuzu 4BD, an all mechanical engine just as good as the 4BT, but less noise and almost none of the vibration. An advantage of the Cummins is you'll have good options on a tranny, but the Isuzu will have to have an adapter for the tranny.

Why not be a pioneer? If this was the thinking for the first person to do the Cummins 6BT swap there never would be a Cummins 6BT swap. If you have the means and the know how go for it. If you explore and find it physically won't work then move on.

Thanks guys for all the information. I admit I like the sound of the cummins better, but sound isn't everything. I have read about the cummins swaps and like the idea and since I know my 7.3 and all the stuff I have done to it I was curious if it would fit. The 7.3 is a monster of an engine especially with the added edge controller and full 3inch exhaust makes it fast too. Thanks again for all the thoughts.

That advise was for the OP. A pioneer is someone who has the knowledge, experience, fortitude, time, and money to blaze a new trail. I'm darn happy there are pioneers on this board, 4BTswaps, and others who swapped the 4BD into the FZJ80 so people like me can start planning that swap into my rig. We need more pioneers, but based on the OP's question, I didn't gather he was the pioneer type (nor am I or the vast majority on this board).

Yes, the Toyota 1HD-T is the best fit, literally, but the acquisition cost alone of $10K plus labor, and as HalfK points out, lack of parts, doesn't make this a viable option for most of us.

There is no money tree in my backyard. Pioneer, hardly. I'm just a dude that loved the 80 when it came out and saved and went to the dealership to buy one, got bent over, but it has long been paid for and really want this to be my last vehicle. I am 49.
