Talked to my buddy who works at Toyota HQ and he said the just got the 4R in and it awesome. He said it follows the same line as the Toaco and Tundra, it’s bigger than the Gen 5 and will have the same engines choices as the Taco. He also said it’s going to be even more expensive than the Gen 5.
Seems like Toyota has really blurred the lines of every BOF vehicle they make and not really making any one stand out.

Here's a couple other nuggets:

There are also lots of little hints about how similar it is to the Tacoma, possibly supporting my guess that they are going to produce this in MX, but we will find out shortly. Maybe all the photos in the release were taken in Mexico?
Same. Strictly talking styling I think the 250 looks like the superior vehicle. I kind of like it from certain angles (like rear-3/4) but from the front and side profiles it looks goofy to me. Definitely some 4th and 5th gen cues along with modern day Toyota design language. Not a fan of the dash carryover from the Tacoma.Much prefer the 250 design over this.
I still see more people picking this over the 250 though. Especially cheaper price/third row.

That was my biggest question and thought moving production to Mexico with the new Tacoma might have been part of the delay.Still made in Japan.
-Lame that the throwback feature is 2nd style rear quarter windows rather than an open air experience. It didn’t need to be full roof off but a removable roof panel would have been cool.
The 4Runner hasn't had a manual transmission since 2000, almost 25 years ago. Even on the Taco, the manual take rate is well below 10%. I drove exclusively manual transmission cars for more than 25 years. I greatly prefer an automatic transmission for an offroad-capable SUV. For a sports car, yes, I would prefer a manual, but this isn't a sports car.No manual....no interest. I see no reason to buy this over the LC....and don't see much reason to buy the LC over the GX.
Poor argument. They’ve never had to differentiate it from a Land Cruiser Prado in the US. They haven’t had a Prado in the US since….ever (1990 technically)….yet it’s here now as the LC 250.The 4Runner hasn't had a removable roof since the 1st gen, which was last sold in 1989. That was 35 years ago. I don't understand why some people expected that the 6th gen would have a removable roof or roof panel. The closest Toyota has come to a Wrangler competitor was the FJ Cruiser, which also had a fixed roof.
