Removed about 1/2 inch of grease/mud mix from the steering box..... now the box leaks from the side with the sector shaft adjustment. Didn't before of course.

:flipoff2: to me......

Removed the sector shaft adjustment, and 4 bolts, poped the side off 1/4 inch and drained the box.

What's going to happen if I pull that side of the box on off? I want to hit it with some RTV and re-install. Keeping the manual steering........ and the box seems to be in good shape. Maybe 1.5 of play in the wheel and not leaking on the pitman arm side.

my new FSM should be here next week.......

I figure there will be some shims or something fall out that I can't get back in without flipping the box on it's side or something along those lines........

Thanks!!!!!

Hi,

Since you don't have the FSM yet, here is Coolerman's website on a steering box rebuild - http://www.globalsoftware-inc.com/coolerman/fj40/21A.htm. He goes over everything the FSM does. I have completely rebuilt my steering box, and it really isn't that tough. The hardest part for me was disconnecting the column shift and getting the steering column/box out to work on it. Once it was out, it was a piece of cake.

Good luck!

i'm about ready to do a scout p/s on my 69, if you want a stock box to rebuild without taking yours off (if it's a daily driver) let me know, you can have it for shipping.
