Calling all of you ex Toyota employees and FJ40 gurus. In preparation for a future build and to help others I want to compile a resource of FST AND 69 specific parts needed to build a 1969 FJ40 FST. The information will be comprised of 4 categories.
  1. FST specific parts that are still available from Toyota
  2. FST specific parts that are NLA
  3. 1969 specific parts that are still available from Toyota
  4. 1969 specific parts that are NLA
Assumptions:
  • Already have 1969 tub
  • Already have FST bows
  • "1969 specific parts" for this project is defined as exterior or interior items that are specific to the 1969 model, excluding drivetrain or engine parts such as the 1F period air cleaner, or coarse spline hubs.
Other Information:
  • If you have information please list it in the following format "description, part number, QTY required, other information"
  • If you know what year range a particular part covers then please list this next to the part number and description as other information.
  • Pictures are worth a thousand words.

1969 specific parts that are still available from Toyota
  • LAMP ASSY, REAR COMBINATION, RH, RED; 81550-60130; 1; 03/1969-09/1973

  • LAMP ASSY, REAR COMBINATION, LH, RED; 81550-60130; 1; 03/1969-09/1973

You need to know the month of your 69 to get the correct parts. There were changes during the 69 model. Not clear what month the 69 model started. 10/69 was the start of the 70 model year. Toyota has not supported the pre 3/69 in the parts system for decades.
10 of any year is usually the start of the next year. Care to give details on the changes? I'm going to guess one of the changes to be the change from round front markers to the early rectangular, among other things. I doubt the FST specific parts changed at all. All I have on hand right now is some outdated pics. My truck is a 3 speed column shift with PTO winch. I think I have the earlier of the 69's.

SOR has a chart showing month and year of production from 1964 on.
Model date start
10/69 70
7/70 71
7/71 72
9/72 73
9/73 74
1/75 75
9/75 76
8/76 77
9/77 78
1/79 79
9/79 80
8/80 81
10/81 82
10/82 83
9/83 84
Earlier years are not that clear. Because of the padded dash and other changes can tell the start date of the 69 model. 68-69 few changes happened on different dates. Because Toyota does support anything 3/69 harder to tell the dates for those changes. Some of those changes. Size of rear tail lights, shape of front turn signals, shape of pads on the hood the windshield rests on and different hub caps.

This is my 9/67 in the late 1970s. That is a 73 hard top because of an accident in fall 1975.

I ran a soft top on it during part of the 1990s.

First two pictures are with 73 bows and doors. Top is a Kayline top bought new in 1994. Last picture are bows, doors off a 69 and used Kayline top that I bought in 1995.

Here is how it looks today with a bad clutch for almost twenty years.

The running board/side steps, looks like the diamond plate pattern is a hard top feature and the rubbery padded type are a FST only item. I am not expecting to build my truck 100% period correct down to every little detail. My goal is to build it so that when someone looks at it they can say, "hey that's a 69-ish", if I have a few details from the earlier 69 and a few from the later intermingled, that's 100% OK. This thread is purely informational and a reference for others who have soft tops of similar vintage. Anybody have pictures and or part numbers for the door straps, soft top door parts (seals etc.), and the brackets that bolt into the rear corners of the tub?

The rubber padded running boards changed to diamond plate with the 70 model. The accident in 75 landed the cruiser on the passenger side. That running board was damaged. I replaced both with some later ones. I still have the original padding running boards and few other sets.

68 and 69 models are easy to recognize because of the amber reflectors behind the emblem on the aprons. Hard top or soft top didn't matter. Only thing that stands as easy to recognize is FST had a tailgate while hard tops had barn doors. When Toyota changed the hard top design in mid 1965 both top and soft top models were made to except the. The other type of top. I have a 73 FST that had a 72 hard top and doors on when I bought it. Luckily all the original soft top parts were came with it. On my 68 the only thing I did to install the soft top was drill hole along the top of the tub for the twists. That only because the Kayline top twists did not match the factory twists. The factory twist holes were already there. the brackets for the back bows already had bolts in the correct location. If I drilled the dash for eyebolts (the dash itself has the hole but not pillar behind it) and added a tailgate it could pass as a FST. US model FSTs all came with soft style doors. The doors are the hardest to find for a factory soft top model. Aftermarket bows are available. Usually those are made to work with soft doors. Most run hard doors. The B pillar bow and header over the doors are different depending on which style doors are being used.

Every time Toyota upgrades their parts system information is lost and things get moved to different diagrams that make no sense. For the most part all the information required is still out there. It's the parts that are the issue. How complete is your soft top model? What's left of the doors look like either Best Top or Kayline doors.

If you haven't checked your VIN for a date I believe you have a early 69 going off the pad on the hood. As for tail lights probably have the earlier smaller ones. Easy way to tell is if the mounting holes in the crossmember are offset from each other or even spaced from the end. Either one requires a cone on the back for protection. Last time I checked the front bib lights were still available and cheap.

If you don't want to post your VIN at least check it on the chart from SOR. It is linked here in the 45 section. In the threads at the top is a list for long wheel base trucks. The link is in the first post. Believe a 12/68 FJ40 was posted up and it has the later pads on the hood. If your are a single lever could be a 68 product date. 68 engine seem to be a mix bag if it came with an air pump or not. Believe one with an air pump was on mud within the last year. Three things to look for. Cylinder have will have ports for an air rail. Mine had ports with plugs in them. Two pulley harmonic balancer. Mine had a single pulley but engine had been rebuilt before I bought the cruiser in 1974. A second port for a hose from the air pump. Mine was there with a correct fitting rubber plug. Not sure the story about the 68 air pump. Or where it was required. 68 model the US required dash pads. Possible all US models we ready to add an air and California was requiring one? Toyota planning ahead for up coming emissions. 69 did not have an air pump.

A month and year date and some engine pictures could help fill in more pre 3/69 information.

I think the dilapidated top that's on my truck now was a best tops top. The original Toyota top wore out. The doors, and bows were stored and the best top top and doors were installed. I do know that this truck did NOT come with a factory roll bar. I'll get some more pictures and info.

Got a few pictures yesterday. The data plate was gone. I did not have enough time to wire brush and try to find the frame # or engine #. I'm thinking rebuild the drivetrain and slap on a topnault tub. I think the new tub would be worth the $7k to not have to do rust repair. This one says it's a 68' but I'm not so sure...

This thread made me finally do the five minutes of googling to understand why (for example) Cruiser Corps lists spring green as a '70-only color but my truck is definitely a Spring Green one titled as a '69. It's because (if chart below is accurate) it's a late October '69 production that was probably sold as a '70 model year that someone I assume bought brand new round about this time of year 55yrs ago. For added fun, base price then was $3048, which converts (inflation) up to about $26k today. :)

darth vader light you got
you say you have correct bows
door strap eyelets you got
rear bow mount hardware you have (maybe ... only show the upper mount on one side)
rear tailgate ... got some hardware... missing tailgate and hardware to attach
missing turnbuckles (last checked still available)
missing soft doors and all hardware associated with them
missing door straps and associated hardware
windshield channel
vinyl white top

just to name a few off top of my head... nothing but the common sense fasteners are available thru toyota

I do not know what on his webpage he wrote this: Data was complied using the best available information submitted by members of the Land Cruiser Forum www.ih8mud.com
That information is from SOR.com Frequently Asked Questions About Your Land Cruiser - Specter Off-Road - https://www.sor.com/cat/005d before they did the webpage makeover

Interesting- I didn't exactly dig deep for the info, but it was useful for my purposes. I wonder if someone reposted the table without attribution to SOR and they just... found/ used it.

Some good info here, keep it coming. I was hoping to have a list of the parts, part numbers, and a reference picture for each. I'm not looking to purchase parts, just compiling information for others. FST parts specific information is scattered all over mud.

So you would like to research and compile information.... but... have others do the leg work for you?

go to toyodiy or any other online fast moving parts catalog ... pick the specific market you want to research and spend the hours of copying and pasting information into a doc .... then copy the information .... and...

you can post up here when you are done

We will let you know if your missing anything :meh:
