Hi all, started on my 69 engine swap this weekend.I got a F eng.to swap in for my old F,it was free from a fellow mudder. So I am looking to do a low buck swap, just the basics to get it running again. The top end was supposedly done 25k ago,the guy said it was running when pulled for a V-8 swap.
The colum shift linkage is hard to disconnect from top of tranny/tc(bolts are just spinning in the rubber boot).I think I will pull off the cover off the tub& acess it better.I am also thinking about the floor shift conversion& also dumping the 3-sp.for a 4-sp.I have a sm420 but it needs a rebuild at the least(it's all apart in a milk crate!) I am working in less that ideal conditions on a sloped driveway,it kinda sucks for the weight of these engines. So I think I am giong to buy a engine hoist(as opposed to the rental $25 a day) from Harbor frieght, pull the whole eng/tranny/tc out and think on it for a wile.My 40 has been sitting for 8 years! So there is some rust, corrosion,to deal with.I am not looking to do any resto. type work right now, maybe just a little rattle can paint here and there.Clean things up,try to get everything working.
I am also planning on using the old carb.stock one.Only prob.is the air cleaner has been off for a long time and it was just covered with plastic.Looks fine, just have to take it off the old eng.I also picked up an old set of warn locking hubs,so I would like to do away with the vacum assist FD set-up and just go with a floor shift on the TC also.
I wanted to go with the 2F/SM420 setup, but I ended up with this F eng.I don't really want to spend the cash on adapters for the 4-sp right now,but i will still have to fork some out to do the floor shift w/the 3-sp.I will try and post up some pics.
Thanks,John

look under the rubber boot there is a flat spot to put a wrench on.its been a while but i thinks its 12mm good luck

Your F engine will last a long time just keep it tuned and full of clean oil. The F engines (except the 74's) do not have a full flow oil system so make sure you stay on top of the oil changes and use a good quality oil filter, I use the NAPA Gold filters which are made by Wiks. The Aisin Carbs are very good carbs, buy a carb kit and a gal of carb cleaner and it will provide you with lots of trouble free survace. You don't have to remove the Xfercase vacuum shifters just because you are installing lock-out hubs, they will still function as long as you lock the hubs and the vacuum mechanisms are functional. A couple of things if you afford it buy/find a vacume Advance distributor and put a Petronix electronic ignition set in it, you won't be disappointed. Also if you can replace as many gaskets, seals and belts as you can before you install the new engine and take a look at the radiator, no sense in installing a new engine just to cook it with a bad radiator.

Good Luck!

I am working on my 69 engine as well. I spoke to Gary at Mudracks and he was very convincing about swapping out a 1F for a 2F engine. SO, I spent the extra $400 and bought a 2F to replace my 1F. Of course lots of work to do on the 2F but it is a much better engine. If you need a 69 1F, let me know. I am in Napa so it isnt far.

I pulled the burned-up 1F out of my '69 and replaced it with a '77 2F. Since I retained my '69 VIN number, no need to get it past emissions :)

I think I paid $250 for the engine + the cost of the rebuild. Since the ancillaries are all interchangeable I was able to keep my water pump, carb, alternator, headers, etc. Since I was already replacing the engine it was well worth the cost to upgrade, IMHO.

It did, however, just move the weak link down the line, so now I am replacing the drive-train. Be prepared for that, work on these old LC's is always a bubble squeeze.....

F engines are not all that bad, IMHO if it is running well...not burning oil, consuming water, and tuned properly it is not a bad engine, loads of low end TQ. I would focus on other things before I spent the money on a 2f + it's rebuild (2-3K)… such as rebuilding a worn out tranny/xfer case, steering rebuild, disk breaks, oh and yea the freaking rust that we all love and enjoy fighting on a daily basis.
If you are planning on making this a highway DD then yea maybe you should consider a 2f, but you are still going to spend coin on making it run smoother and more efficiently for just that purpose. My F engine runs like a champ; I can drive the truck to 60mph w/o worries and often drive it as a DD, which it 160 per week jut to work and home.

Good Luck!

I believe the flat spot on the shaft is a 10mm.

I am trying to post up some pics.and a progress report.I have got the new engine installed and now just working on the carb.(rebuilt-thanks,Corey).
Let me see if this quick reply can get my thread back in the recent posts.I forgot I started this one in Jan.

Nope,it is the one of my tranny/tc cleaned up and the floor shift conversion getting put together.More later!

Here are some more pics.Last one is how it sits now, just have to finish putting everything back together. The other two pics.are before n' after my rattle can paint job of the firewall and frame.

Going to get my radiator pressure tested at a local shop, also thinking about pulling the gas tank.I need to clean it out,it's been sitting with some gas in there for almost 8-yrs.
The guy at the rad.shop quoted me $200 on tanking& sealing the gas tank.Seemed a little steep,I am going to take a look in there after I pull the tank.Once I know the rad.is good,I can just try and get it running with using a gas can.Clean gas and new fuel filters!

I have also converted my car port into a garage! Built some workbenches, put up some plywood on the sides to keep the rain out.
The wife came home one day and said it looked like Sanford N' Son! I had to do something with all the parts and keep them out of the rain.
My 40 has been a rolling project,as I have had to move it around quite a bit.Using a come-a-long,tow straps, chains.I have found that those threaded single chain links that you can use lots of ways, real helpful.Getting 4-5' at a time takes a wile with the come a long.
I used a retaining wall 4x4's to attach my tow points(rear tow points off my old 80 worked really good).
So I pulled the new engine into the car port 1st.Then the 40 in,I was alble to pull the 40 with the winch(come-a-long) right into the engine hoist that was stationary holding the new engine/tranny/tc.Worked really good, fun to do by yourself!

Here are a few more pics.My dog"Bailey" has been bugging the s*** out of me the whole time with his sticks, balls, frisbes.Must be that retrever thing,he can go ALL DAY LONG! I think I spent half the time throwing stuff for him!
Enjoy,John:beer:
