Hey all, so I know this is not the "correct" gearing for 37's but trying to get any experience you may have with this combo. My original F motor in my 66 runs strong, good compression, some oil blow by but not too concerned. I have a 350 sitting here but would like to keep the F for the original factor. Swapping in FZJ80 e-locked axles with 37" tires, seeing how this combo may perform on trails, sand, etc. Any input? Thanks

Trailer queen?
If so it will be ok on the trail. Awful on the street.
Motor doesn't have enough power to push the rig
down the road.
I have a 74 with the F, 4.11's and 36" tires, and an sm420.
Works great on the trail but on the street it won't get out of
it's own way.

Stock three speed transmission?

Sorry guys: SM465 with 3 spd case. AA adapter (irrelevant). Stock gears in the 80 axles.

Not too worried about street drive ability, the duramax (war wagon) is the dragster . Just didnt know if really was going to have a hard time on long grades and just plain undrivable on the street. 75%+ it is going to be on fire roads or trails.

Thanks, any other input is appreciated!

Also - Not a trailer queen! Will be loaded down with a 37" spare, coolers, camping gear (beer) & spare parts.

For see any major issues with this? :hillbilly:

Before I dropped the 78 2F in, I had a 69 F w/ a sm420 and 4.11 on 35's. It was alright around town but sucked pulling long grades (3rd gear, 45 mph, 3K rpm). It is not much better with the 2F. It is fine off-road, but is underpowered in sand and mud. However, I can deal with the lack of power when compared to the $$ and time it would take to put a 350in. If it is a long distance I will just tow it with my d-max.

I think it's going to be way too tall of gearing. What size tires do you have now? A good test would be to take off from a light in 3rd. That's what it will feel like...

Well right now I have bald 33 AT's with the original 3 on the tree. Taking off in 3rd almost chugs it down to nothing, lots of throttle to move. Why is the 350 sitting in the back of my garage sounding like a better option? Hmm

Just for a data point... Mine is a strong 2F, SM420, 37's and 4.11's. I think it's just fine around town and on the highway here in Texas (fairly flat). Cruises down the interstate at 75 like a breeze. No issues.

However, last summer I loaded it with my two boys and pulled a small trailer with our stuff in it to Colorado. It pretty much sucked on the grades. Like Bsilva said, 3rd gear, 45mph. Now I'm thinking 4.88's are in my future.

I assumed you had an SM465 due to your previous post. With that transmission, try 2nd gear.
