As many others our rear sill is bad (in fact: mostly gone). We're looking for options te replace it. A landcruiser specialist here sells pre-79 rear sills. Can we use this for our 62 FJ40?

You will need one that is pre-1975 to make it the easy and mostly correct. Pre-1979 sill will be set up for ambulance doors, and have different holes in it. I recently used one from Cool Cruisers of Texas, and had no problems putting it in. Hope that helped.

Rear sill ccot

Hello HD,,,,,,,,,I actually bought a rear sill for a 1964 FJ40 from CCOT a few years back. They did a great job, perfect fit. FJFJFJ

Thanks fjfjfj, I did an enquiry for the shipping costs at CCOT: that is getting quite expensive. Have to think which way to go.

Bend your own. Find a sheet metal/fabrication shop with a brake and give them a cross section diagram with your specs. You can even choose a thicker gauge steel.

Hello HD,,,,,,,,,,,,Yes, I agree with FJnotCJ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,if you can't justify the cost to ship a Cool Cruiser Sill over to you then you should have one made up. Once you cut yours out, even if it's trashed, you will be able to find someone who can refab it for you. But your right, you gotta compare the costs. I can only tell you that the one I bought from Cool Cruisers was indeed perfect. A perfect fit for my 1964 anyway. Good luck. Let me know if you need any assist from my end. Glad to help out. FJFJFJ

Yeah will probably go that way. We're quite handy ourselves with metal. Don't know yet when we'll do this. I'll let you know if there are more questions.

Thanks.

Not sure if you made a decision yet. But I just cut mine out and welded a new sill in, it is a 1962...I think. I was doing a sill and rear frame member. I used 2x2 square tubing for the sill and the original corner wings were reusable. The 2x2 square tubing isn't a perfect fit, so I will have to fab up a couple pieces to connect my bed to the sill and seal the doors when closed. The 2x2 needed holes cut to get body mounts in.
Not sure if a 2.5" x 2.5" square tubing or similar would work or if you can find any.

I would think you could easily have a sheet metal shop or welding shop bend you a piece of channel steel that is about 2.5" wide channel and matches exactly what you cut out. You might need to drill a few holes but this would be cheap.

Good luck and post pics to share.

Thanks. Will probably go this way. We have mm's here and a 60 mm profile will probably work fine. Here some pics of the before stage. Actually don't know when we will start with this. Will keep you updated.

Thanks uted! This wil certainly help me. Looks like you had just a little bit more rust than we have. Amazing what you did with that, also with the doors.

Our 62 does not have the inforcements in the rear sill.

We will continue (with the help of your pics) on friday. Will keep you posted.

Don't want to hijack Daves thread, so I'll post this in my own rear sill thread. (For LITP)
I do/did have the U channel behind the rear sill. I got these pics from Dave. I hope you can see the reinforcements I mean inside the U channel, right next to the body mounts.

It appears that area of the sill so rusted the box part is gone. Just check a 60 FJ25 soft top. 61 FJ40 hard top and the 62 soft top tub (VIN just less then 15000. All have the boxed support. Pictures from the 62. If you want I can get picture from my earlier cruisers as well. But the sill should be boxed in that area.

Well, it needed a very close look, but I found just a little piece of what is left of the box part in the rear sill channel. See pics. It is really completely gone!

Also some pics of the progress. I could use some help with the size off this box part and the thickness.. Thank you guys!

Oops, I jast noticed the pics were upside-down. Fixed that.

Thickness of the metal is approximately 1/16".

Width, measuring from the top outside edge to the bottom outside edge is approximately 2 1/4".

I say "approximately" because I used a tape measure, not a dial caliper, which I need but don't have . . . yet.
