60 springs and new hangers

Thought I would post up some pics of the current state of affairs. I have an a 67fj40 that has been through way too many different setups. Started with a shackle lift, then a pro comp lift, sky jacker, hybrid, and has been SOA rear with SUA front on dropped hangers and 4 " springs. FInally getting around to doing it right.

This started when a friend of mine gave me a very nice frame and springs from a 78. My 67 frame is pretty toasty, and has been plated for 4 feet on both sides. I have torn the rear hangers off, and there is a pretty good twist to the frame.

The new frame is great, but the rear gussets were junk, and the spring hangers were a bit punky. The rest of the frame is as nice as I have seen in the northeast. Thanks to mike for the hookup. Also, thanks to VTcruiser60 here, I had a set of fj60 springs to throw at the rear.

First thing was to make the new hanger mounts. Used a plasma from a friend and cut the shape like the original, using 3/16ths. Flipped the rear hangers and made up a new rear crossmember out of 3/16th c channel.

Made some new rear triangle gussets out of 3/16ths box tube 2x2. Gusseted over the rear hangers for a little bit o beef.

Thanks to Poor Wally, here is a slick little idea to mount 60 springs. The issue is that the 60 eye is much larger than the 40. Also, as you could guess, the pin is different as well.

Though I had some great insight from others on this board (thanks camcruiser and cruiserdrew)- here is what we tried.

The spring pins on a 40 and 60 are pressed into the mounting plate. Since the 60 has one bolt and the 40 has 2, We just pressed out the 40 pin, drilled it out, and slid the 60 pin in. Drilled out the back side of the frame mount to fit the bigger pin through, bolted it up (temporarilly- I need smaller mounting bolts) and welded the pin in. Had to stretch the hanger a little to fit it, and I will still end up shaving down the bush a little, but they are in.

You can also see the gussets I made up for over the hangers.

the spring flip is also temporary, I have not drilled and flipped the mil wrap, Not sure where I want the wheel to be. I need to move it back as the 38" boggers hit my body crossmember on flex, just not sure if I want the 2" stretch from the springs in the reg fashion, or the 4+ reversing them gains.

Also running flipped spings in front with a proffitts shackle reversal kit. Not done, but you can see the frame plate I had to make up as the kit drops the rear hanger halfway through the inner hole in the frame.

the packs were torn down, wheeled and hit with tractor equipment teflon paint, $10 a pint. More than enough in a pint to do them all. The rear shackles are from the 60, with the upper shackle bolt pressed out and kept the 40 bushings and hanger up top. that is it for now. with about 600 lbs over the rear, they were at around 70 degrees. My wally tub is way more than that, they should settle in around 60 degrees.

More next week, hopefully.

Ok, one more- here is my tub coming off. DO NOT do this like we did. Took us 5 minutes to get it off, and two and a half hours to put it back on after it slid backwards. The tub is a Poor Wally tub, all 3/16ths, and I totally underestimated the weight. Two of us had no shot of getting where it needed to be. I will be rolling the chassis out from under it, and putting the tub on cribbing.
